i'm planning on stacking two horizontal cabinets to house glasses and booze with a perfekt 9" wine shelf thingy on each side. tonight at ikea i saw a light shelf that was used as a base in a horizontal cabinet. i can't find it on the website but i am intrigued by the idea of installing it between the two horizontal shelves so that it acts as the top of one/bottom of the other.
the issues, as i see them:
1. i'll need to attach hinge hardware to the metal frame of the light shelf.
2. it is slightly thicker than the top/bottom of the cabinet box, so i'm not 100% sure i can make it work so that the doors fit.
i think i could cut the top of the bottom cabinet so it's more like a base cabinet. leave a strip in front and back to hold the sides up...and to attach the door, but cut out the middle so the light van shine through.
the light shelf is named Nian, they are discontinued. they are still available at some stores (soooo pissed at myself for not picking any up in Az while on road trip)
they come with brackets to use as a shelf, but can also be assembled as the base. sized to fit wall cabs of 18, 24 & 30.
now i'll go read the rest of the post (btw, i got the last 30 in emeryville and picked up 2 for the 24... don't know what i'll do with them in the future, but at least i have some symmetry)
hmmm, from seeing the shelf unassembled irl i can't say that it will work, the hinge is especially troubling as the material at that spot is not the metal...
cutting portions out seems much more reasonable... now to find the sizes
ack! i just saw they had it on the wall, it was installed in teh base of a cabinet, and i swear the tag said rationell on it! i didn't check to see if they had it in the 30" i would need. guess it's back to white marsh tomorrow to see if they have it!
this, right? the good news is that they are marked down to 30$
i'm just so peeved, there were SO many in az that i assumed i could pick em up in emeryville.
i need to stop assuming.
i learned of these lights (and their discontinuation) on the same day i hear my beloved rubrik turq is getting the axe.
not a good day for dulci
hope you find some cause they are really cool (even if eva doesn't like the light they cast)
Since it can act as a shelf, I wonder if you could achieve the effect you're after by using a regular (non-horizontal) cabinet but attaching the doors horizontally? It seems like it would be possible to mod the hinge holes in order to do this. Depends on how the measurements work out, of course.
Does anyone know if the shelves shine significant light downward as well as upward? I was thinking how neat it would be to use one in an upper cabinet in my office, or in a hutch type of thing in my living room.
i went back to ikea and confirmed that the ligth shelf i saw is new. it's labeled "RATIONELL shelf with built-in lighting." i didnt' pay much attention to sizes available (sorry!) but i think it was 24", 30" and 36".
i can't find it on the website but it's mentioned here...with the cord you need to use it...that i did not buy....which means i have to go back tomorrow....
