Hacking wall cabinets for use as base cabinets

I know I've seen a bunch of questions about hacking a wall cabinet for use on the ground. Obviously this is something that is officially sanctioned by Ikea (it's in the kitchen planner), yet the instructions for doing it don't really exist.

I have one of these cabinets in my kitchen and hacked it up a few days ago. I took a bunch of pictures and included detailed directions here:

I don't know if this is really a tutorial, since I'm my method may not be the best method, but I thought it would be fun to share.

Re: Hacking wall cabinets for use as base cabinets

Thank you so much for the photo essay! I am planning to use the suspension rail for my wall-as-base cabinets so I won't need to cut off the "lip," however it was extremely helpful to me to see how the leg attachment goes.

Thanks!

Thanks! I am thinking about using a corner wall cabinet as a base outer corner, your instructions are great encouragement!

Re: Hacking wall cabinets for use as base cabinets

thanks! you saved me work. i'm using a bunch of wall cabinets as bases and was putting off measuring where to attach the legs.

to be clear. the hole gets drilled 3-3/4" from the front edge and 3-3/8" from the side of the cabinet?

Thumbs up Re: Hacking wall cabinets for use as base cabinets

Wow... Nice job! Would you mind if there were a version of the write up added as a tutorial here? If you like, you can create it in the Tutorials section by clicking the "New Entry" button at the top of the page. Basically you just upload your images ("Upload to Gallery" link under smilies in the post editor) into your gallery space (you can upload pretty huge images in the Galleries) and then drop them as thumbs ("My Gallery" link right below "Upload to Gallery") into the tutorial as appropriate, the image left and image right button can be used with either images or text (Susan uses them to great effect to add that "POP" text in larger font and different color that you see in magazine articles all the time.) to add some style if you like.

Either Susan or I could also transcribe the article and post it under your name if you like? I just hate to see really useful things like your write up get buried in the threads where someone that's looking for it might not find it.

This is definitely something that will save many folks some trial and error down the road!

Careful, the hole *does* get drilled 3-3/4" from the front edge, but the 3-3/8" measurement is not from the side edge of the cabinet, but from the side edge of the bottom piece. If you want to measure from the side edge of the cabinet itself, you'll need to add 3/4" to take into account the width of the side piece.

This is kind of hard to explain, but if you do it correctly, then when you line up the hole you drilled with the pre-existing hole in the leg base, you should find that the little plastic rectangle that sticks out from the leg base overlaps the side piece, but doesn't stick out beyond that.

A clarification should be made here: I believe that the distance I gave from the front edge will cause the kick plates to line up with regular depth cabinets, but since the cabinet I did this to is a loner, I have no way to test this (or rather I'm too lazy to test it). Also, setting the legs this far back from the front edge doesn't do a lot for the stability of the cabinet. If I wanted a stable cabinet with 4 legs, I would move the legs much closer to the front of the cabinet. However the distance from the side would remain the same since it is important to keep the legs close enough to the edge that the can support the side pieces.

James - I'll gladly add this to the tutorial page, but I'm not 100% sure that my measurements are ideal (as noted above). I guess I'll include a big disclaimer at the beginning....

Re: Hacking wall cabinets for use as base cabinets

I never drill to install the leg blocks into wall-as-base cabinets.

Use a small handsaw - even a mini-hack saw - to cut off the two nipples from the leg block, and then use a screw to attach the block to the cabinet.

Re: Hacking wall cabinets for use as base cabinets

chuck- the other poster did the same thing. he (she?) simple drilled a pilot hole for the screw that would attach the leg to the base.
