In order to make the ikea base corner cabinet fit our kitchen, I need to shorten the overall width of the corner cabinet by about 2-3 inches. It comes 49 inches wide and we need it to be 46-47 inches. The store designer said we could cut the cabinet carcass and put an 18 inch door and drawer on the open end instead of using what comes standard with it (21 inch door and drawer). But this seems too complicated to me. Couldn't we cut off a few inches at the end of the cabinet that is opposite where the door opens--the end that is supposed to go against the wall? Then we wouldn't have to do anything to the door and drawer. What am I missing here?

Welcome!

If I'm thinking about this correctly, you'd still have to use a smaller door/drawer and it wouldn't look right. Mainly because if you shorten it and push it up closer to the wall, the door opening will also be closer to the wall, and therefore partially cut off by the cabinet that runs at a 90 degree angle to it. eh?

Or am I thinking about it all wrong? Wouldn't surprise me, but please let me know either way.

Susan

Yeah, I think you're right--that must be why the Ikea professional installer is saying that we would have to cut the cabinet where the door opening is and then insert a smaller door and drawer. I hope that works!

Susan, isn't there a built in 4" filler strip on the blind cabinet? It's 49" long, and 24" is lost in the right angle, 21" goes for the door and drawer, and 4" is left after the right angle before the door and drawer starts, no?. I was told you just need a minimum of 2" to clear the opposing door. If you cut 2" off the end that goes against the wall, wouldn't the "filler" strip just be 2" instead of the 4"?

Can you fit an 18" or 15" drawer and door on it instead of the 21", if you want to shorten it more on the other end? Any other additional special hardware needed to fit it other than that needed for the the 21" door and drawer?

You got me. I don't have one, and to be honest, I've never spent that much time looking at one. Frankly, it kinda hurts my brain to think about it.

Sounds like you have more information about it than I've forgotten, so I'll let you be the expert on this one. Unless someone else wants to chime in....?

Re: shortening ikea corner cabinets

I stayed up way to late last night trying to figure out this very problem. I have a 49" corner and I need it to be 47". I think there is enough room left over to take a max of 2" off. I did this today which was not easy since you have to move all the holes into the exact spots on your newly cut side....drill bit sizes are all metric so that was difficult working with that. I will let you know after I get my uppers on the wall and push it back into place and put on the drawer and door if it worked. I had to just pull the trigger and try it since I couldn't find anyone on here who had attempted it. Hope it works or I will be redesigning my kitchen!
