Creating Glass Door Cabinet with Drawer

This is a sort of Modification, LOTS of ?s post, so if the thread needs to be somewhere else, please feel free to move.

We are looking to create something like this glass door cabinet but with a drawer in the middle:

The space we have is too narrow and shallow for purchasing one of these. I think that the 1 Glass Door (18" W x 12" D x 30" H) would be perfect to fit.

IKEA | Built-in kitchens | AKURUM/RATIONELL system | AKURUM

I am envisioning that we'd get two of these units to put on top of each other mounted on the wall with 'faux' legs, then, in between them, we'd put an 18" half drawer. But, I'm not quite sure of how to really plan this creation.

So, here are my crazy amount of questions:

1. When you order the wall cabinet, do you order the 'wall cabinet frame' (IKEA | Built-in kitchens | AKURUM/RATIONELL system | AKURUM)? Or, do you order panels to cover the wall cabinet sides to make it the veneer not particleboard?
2. What would we use to add the drawer? I'm thinking that we would need to order some panel to cut sides to mount the drawer rails, too, then we'd cover it with a veneer piece to match the rest of the unit?
3. For the drawer front, we'd want a short drawer just for holding like wine cork openers, etc, so is the 6" drawer front the shortest? Since the drawer is like 3 1/8" or something, could we make the drawer only 4" with the sides and drawer front?
4. The rest of the cabinets are Nexus Birch. The closest that I can find to this is the Adel Birch. Is this going to match? What veneer panel matches the Adel Birch/Nexus Birch? I can't really find one I think looks right on.
5. For adding the legs, do just put them into the bottom cabinet, or do you get the plinth? I can't really tell what that is for adding to the bottom so you don't have to have legs just cabinet straight down or to put the legs into.
6. Would we put something on top of the unit to cover the top, if we don't get the cabinet frame?
7. If you are mounting these to the wall, are their weight restrictions? I'm thinking of adding 1 more glass shelf to each unit since we are going to be putting glassware in, but I didn't know if this was okay for the weight restriction.
8. Can you get a solid glass panel instead of the decorative one that they illustrate online?
9. Does anyone know if wine bottles will fit into the 12" D wall cabinet? We were thinking to put some non-permanent wine racks in the bottom, but don't know if the cabinets are even too shallow for bottles.

Re: Creating Glass Door Cabinet with Drawer

Wow, those are a lot of questions! I'll try to answer a few of them. It's an interesting idea.

The cabinet frames/boxes come in white or birch-effect laminated MDF so nowhere would particleboard show, only the birch-colored laminate. You can get cover panels to match the door so none of the laminate would show on the outside.

Almost everything is sold separately, cabinet box, legs, doors, hinges, drawer box, drawer front, cover panels, etc.

Glass doors are specific to the doorstyle. Adel Birch has "bowtie" squares on the glass. Nexus Birch doesn't have a specific glass door. There are the aluminum frame, frosted glass doors which can be paired with any style solid door. If you want the divided pane (mullions?) glass doors like in the inspiration piece, Stat (white), Lidingo (white), and Liljestad (dk brown oak) have that feature. Glass doors come in 39"H or 30"H.

Since you're using the 12"D cabinets they will be supported by the suspension rail on the wall. Depending on the look you want, you can use the black plastic legs with plinth/toekick, or stainless steel round Capita legs, or the stainless steel square Numerar legs, or even have them floating with no legs, or you could fashion some decorative wooden legs.

What are the dimensions of the space you have available (height, width, depth)? Is it surrounded by wall on three sides? I would use a 12"D x 24"W x 80"H pantry cabinet, cut the top, bottom, and back to 18"W and add doors/drawers/shelves where you like. The height of this cabinet can be shortened too if needed. (Actually, since I'm not adept at cutting things exactly, I would personally buy another 18"W wall cabinet and use its top and bottom and only have to cut the backing ). So 39"H + 6.25"H drawer + 30"H = 75.25"H

It is possible to shorten a drawerfront but you may want to practice on a damaged one from the As-Is dept. so you're sure you can get the finishing the way you like it.

I think most wine bottles are too tall to be able to place them horizontally in the cabinet, pointing out.

I hope that helps some,
Gloria

Re: Creating Glass Door Cabinet with Drawer

That does help. I like the idea of the pantry and converting it as the base. That would be much easier.

I'm not so crazy about the door options to match the Nexus Birch. I'd rather get something that we could leave in the condo when we sold, but I do prefer the look of the divided pane.

We have some time before our trip up to the Ikea, so we'll be mulling over all this!!
