I'm very new to the idea of using Ikea cabs and found this forum through the GardenWeb kitchen forum; the Ikea design I've been working on is for a u-shaped kitchen that is open to the rest of the house. Both ends of the "u" face out so i wanted to be able to see/use something on the ends to create a "finished" look instead of the side of a cabinet or a panel (I hope this makes sense).

I like the Perfekt shelves for the base, but is there an option for a small upper corner cab, basically the same or similar shape as the Perfekt shelves? For the other end of the "u", which is a tall cab, I plan to attach open shelving for books etc.

As for the open shelves, just buy cabinets w/o doors and hinges See my gallery for examples (some of ours will eventually get shelves but we will leave some open).

NBeth: yes those are the Perfekt shelves. Regarding the open shelving on the tall pantry, I don't want it to be "boxed in" like a cabinet. I'm not so concerned about those right now as much as finding an upper corner cab. Your kitchen w/open shelving looks very nice, btw!

Maybe I should ask for alternative design ideas in the plan and design portion of the forum and see what people might suggest for finishing the ends of the "u" that face out into the rest of our home.

Gloria: I like the Adel doors in Birch. I have some general questions about cabinets, like how to I get the tall cabinets to reach the ceiling? We have 96" ceiling but the tallest tall is 88"? I also have questions about the stove hood. What part of the forum is best for these types of questions?

The 88"H cabinets are about 92" tall once you add the legs/toekick. Then you can add trim to reach the ceiling.

Kitchen planning would be the best place for these types of questions. If you want to compare models of stove hoods, the Appliance forum would be a good place. Really, don't worry about where to put questions. If it's posted somewhere that's "off," the moderators can move it to a place where it will get the attention it deserves.

Adel Birch is my personal favorite but my kitchen remodel is still in the dreaming phase.
