1. I have two 15" pull-outs speced in my kitchen design; one for trash and one for recycables. Besides not installing the two slide out drawers, what do I have to do or buy to put the largest lidded trash container possible in one and two open topped recycling bins in the other? Where did you get your containers? How did you secure them?
2. I have a 122" by 45" U shaped wall area off a hallway that I want to turn into two study desks. Right now I will probably use one as a computer station and the second for my sewing machine. I was thinking of putting in two 15" base cabinets and adding either a Pronomen or Numerar solid beech butcher block counter top to make the desks. I was thinking of getting two 73"X39" countertop sections and cutting them to fit. As the base cabinets are only 24", I was planning to move them to the front of the countertop and put brackets on the wall to secure the back of the counterop.
A few questions -- Can I use my extra 15" slide out drawers from the kitchen in these cabinets (i.e. can a 15" pull-out have three or more slide out drawers)?
Are there better base cabinets to use for a desk?
If the countertop has approximately a 25-30" span between the base cabinets, do I need to additionally support it with anything?
What is the difference between Pronomen or Numerar solid beech butcher block countertops?
If you don't want the extra drawers for the 15" pullouts, just have them deleted from the order - these are all individual items (unlike the 12" pullout, which comes as a set of three). The base cabinets are 30" high - which is desk height, don't put legs underneath, just a 3/4" support (in order to get the cabinet off the floor for door/drawer opening). The countertop can span 24 - 30" without support - you could always secure a cleat along the wall. The difference between the Pronomen and Numerar countertops is the thickness: 1.5" vs 1.125" - the Numerar would be better to span a 30" gap.
I have the 15" pull-out for trash. All we did was install only the bottom, deep drawer (though with a short enough trash can, you could probably put in one of the shallow drawers above if you really wanted). We didn't do any modifications, or rig up anything special for the trash can, and so far it is working just fine. We just put in the largest plastic can we could find (got it at Target) that wasn't wider than the interior drawer measurement. I don't know the size off the top of my head (I'm at work), but it holds the "tall kitchen garbage bag" size bags. I don't keep a lid on it (though it came with one) because it is too much of a pain to pull out the can and then lift the lid, and I like being able to sweepthings in from the counter. The rods at the sides of the deep drawer keep the can from tipping from sice-to-side. The can doesn't fill the whole depth of the cabinet, and would slide back. Right now, I just keep a large size (from Sam's Club) box of bags behind it. It fills up the space perfectly and keeps the can from sliding back. I suppose at some point we might screw something into the bottom of the drawer, but at the moment it seems unnecessary.
I know some people have worried that this set-up wouldn't be stable enough, and used Rev-a-Shelf or some other after-market pull out, but so far, our low tech, no modification method is working perfectly for us.
For the trash question, would it be possible to build a quick frame from wood to fully fill the base and hang bags through? Or is it that too unfinished?
Kitchenmom, that sounds very smart indeed (and a saving of $200 or whatever the Rev-a-shelf one is).
Can I ask, did you install a full-sized door front on that bottom drawer, or just the regular old drawer front so that the cabinet has a visible gap in the middle?
How is it holding up, stability-wise?
Also, I guess you could fit two cans in (one for recyclables) if you wanted to?
kakapo, we did use a full-size door. We used the 15" pullout cabinet, and just didn't order the top two drawers, where were a separate item. It is holding up fine and we haven't had any problems with stability. I love the functionality of it. It is placed right next to the sink and behind my main prep area on the island.
We put in a large can, and there is just room behind it for a jumbo box of trash bags. If you used a smaller can, there should be room for two.
Doorstyle: Lidingo Doors (Kitchen/Bath), Numerar Oak (Waterlox)
We are using two 15" pullouts in our kitchen for garbage/recycling as well.
#1 is in our island and has a large rubbermaid type trash can without the lid (easy to find at Target or Walmart) and uses the kitchen sized trash bags. We did not install any other drawers in this unit although we may have been able to squeeze one in. Only one door/front panel.
#2 is at the entrance to our kitchen from our breakfast/dining area. In this unit I bought two of the larger blue trash containers from IKEA (found them in the Houston store by the drawer accessories in the kitchen dept). They have the option of a lid which we did *not* purchase. One of the bins is for recycling and the other is for garbage. I figured it would be a good idea to have a garbage can where family could dispose of items without crashing into each other in the central cooking, prep, and sink area (where #1 15" PO lives). Again, we only used one door but decided to install a second drawer up top which is being used for all the junk mail that goes straight to the shredder.
We've had no problems with stability having just the large 15x30 inch door attached at the bottom only . . . and with 5 of us using it often, it gets a workout.
We are using two 15" pullouts in our kitchen for garbage/recycling as well.
What is the difference between a pullout cabinet and a full door cabinet?
I am working up a plan for an island with two 18" full door base cabinets. I have already bought the Rationell deep drawers and plan to install it in the cabinets and put garbage cans in there.
Is there a fixed shelf that would need moved in the full door cabinet?
The pullouts only come in 12 and 15" - I'd rather an 18".
