There's a global announcement up as well, but for those (like myself) that mostly live on the "Today's Posts" search results, I thought notice here would probably be a 'Good Idea'.

We've been seeing some periodic site slowdowns as well as occasional outright outages. I've also gotten notifications that there have been scattered database outages, and that's *NOT* a good thing. There's no chance of any damage to the system it's simply a case of the Database being unavailable to respond to a request for the info needed to create a page requested.

In any case, we've initiated a migration to a *much* heavier duty server, I fully expect the difference to be readily apparent in just regular browsing of the forums. We'll be on an enterprise class, fully fault tolerant server which means we should nigh-immune to any drive failures or other equipment problems.

For any fellow techno-weenies out there, we'll be running on a box speced out at:

Dual CPU Quad Core Intel Clovertown
16 GB FB-DIMM dual-ranked RAM
Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) drives in Hardware RAID 10 Hot-Swap Drives and Fans
Dual Gigabit Network Interfaces

So I don't anticipate any bottle necks any time in the near future .

wow... that's soooooommmeeeee server you got there Tigger .. that should keep you hopping around for quite some time... !!

and I do recall some rumored plans of world domination ... so glad that the server will be ready when you can find those plans in the stacks of paperwork ... LOL....

Heh. I wish I could claim it was all ours...

We'll get about 1/6 of the total capacity once it's fully loaded, though we have a full processor core and 2 GB of Ram dedicated solely to us and *substantial* resources available for burst usage. I happen to know that we'll be the first on this particular box though... So for awhile at least it'll be *all* ours.

Just got a notification that the migration has begun. My understanding is that first a full copy of the system will be transferred, once that is complete and the new system is up and running, the existing system will be taken off line so that they can do a differential transfer (to get any data changes that occurred between the full copy transfer and the time old system is taken off line). Once the differential transfer is complete, the new system will be brought back up and will be online with the same IP addresses in the same VLAN as the previous system, so it should be a clean switch over...

Looks like the migration is completed. We're up and running on the new server with all the parameters set as they should be. Hopefully that puts an end to the slowdowns...
