Old Town Lansing is the winner of the $50,000 prize in IKEA's Small Business, Big Dreams Main Street Makeover contest. "Lansing really showed true community spirit and a united effort to win this contest while presenting their small part of the larger city in a fresh and creative way. In addition to their excellent video entry, Lansing really 'got out the vote' and many residents participated actively in the discussion on the IKEAFANS website," said Susan Martin, Administrator of IKEAFANS.com and a guest judge in the contest.
The prize, be awarded in the form of furnishings and design assistance, will be accompanied by a $5000 cash prize. Old Town's participating businesses will be visited by IKEA designers who will work directly with the business owners to plan the renovations of their spaces. You can follow the makeovers at
www.ikea.com/business.
The winners were selected from a finalist pool of 10 towns chosen from over 50 original entries by the official judges in the contest. In the second phase of selection, the communities were able to make their opinions known in an opinion poll on
IKEAFANS.com as well as in the official voting at
Shycast.com.
"In my opinion, the top entries were all very close contenders in terms of overall appeal. Each shone individually in their own way, portraying their community's spirit and vision, while inviting the viewer to take a second look. No matter what the final outcome of the contest, each of these towns have shown themselves to be outstanding communities in their own right and can be proud of the effort and community involvement that went into the production of their video," said Martin.
The second runner up and winner of a $5000 prize is Media, PA. Batavia, IL will also be awarded $3000.
