Lots of Ikea... My Home Remodeling Project

As we finished up most things this past weekend and made one last trip (for now) to Ikea, I though I'd share some photos...

First, my office... which is what got the ball rolling. We've lived in the house since 1999 and my home office, which I spend a lot of time in, had become pretty cluttered. It wasn't great even when we first moved in, so it was in need of a desperate overhaul...

Before:
The room needed EVERYTHING... paint, flooring, a new TV and new furniture.

After:
Being I'm an Art Director by trade, I really wanted to go with an "Artsy" feel to the room. I also wanted to open up the sliding glass door more and have the whole thing be more airy...

Before:

After:

Flooring: Home Depot (Dupont Classic)
Desk: Ikea Vika Gruvan Tabletop and Vika Artur Legs
2nd Desk: Ikea Alve Secretary w /matching Hutch and Bench
Drawer Units - Ikea Helmar and Andy
Chairs: Ikea Alexandar and Franklin, Target (Big Green), Pier 1 Imports (Director's)
Wall Units: Ikea Billy
Chalkboard and various organizers: Ikea
Cat Perch: Petco
Elephant: My daughter got it for me for Xmas
Curtains: JC Penny

More Afters...

Next room coming up in a bit... The Playroom...

Re: Lots of Ikea... My Home Remodeling Project

My office is in a cental location with three rooms surrounding it... on one side is the room we call "The Playroom"...

When we first moved into the house my daughter was much younger and we used it as a playroom for her.... while I worked, she could be in the room right next to me so I could keep an eye on her but still get things done for my job. As she got older and used the room less and less, it became a big storage area... and it really started to drive us crazy. So we decided it was time to get it cleared out. It would now be a "family playroom"...

Before:
I didn't take pictures until we started painting...

After:
I wish I had taken pictures when it looked like a big closet so you'd see the miraculous transformation...

Before:
More Emptiness...

After:
We LOVE movies and are into video games quite a bit... so this is going to be a great "PLAYroom"...

I had promised my husband we'd do a room with an Asian theme (he loves Asian Culture), so this was the one! We went with more modern Asian than traditional.

Flooring: Home Depot (Dupont Classic)
Sofa: Ikea Beddinge
Chairs: Target Milano Rust & Black Chair
Ottoman: Ikea Tylosand
Side Table: Ikea Klubbo
Tall Cabinets: Don't Remember! They are 15 years old!
TV Stand: Home Decorators Wuchow Wide-Screen TV Stand
Wall Decals: ScribbleonWalls.com
Lamps: Ikea
Painting: Ikea
Curtains: JC Penny

Next coming up... Kitchen and Dining Room...

Re: Lots of Ikea... My Home Remodeling Project

My kitchen needed some serious help... and it's needed it for a long time. Unfortunately, we did not have a lot of money to invest in there, and as you all know, kitchens can get expensive fast.

I decided to try painting the cabinets. We took one door down and did a test, and it seemed to work great, so we proceeded with the plan. I say "we" but hubby didn't want to help with the kitchen... since it was my idea, he said "it's all up to you baby"... LOL

Before:
In all it's sadness...

After:
After LOTS of work painting, replacing the ceiling tiles, putting up a new backsplash, buying a new fridge, and getting the floor done...

Before:
From the other side...

After:

It was a LOT of work... I was so fed up with painting by the time I was done -- LOL -- but in the end it was worth it. Including the new floor and refridgerator it only cost us about $3500!

Flooring: Home Depot (Dupont Classic)
Paint & Polycrylic: Home Depot
Tiles: Amazon, Self-stick Aluminum Walls Tiles
Ceiling Panels: Home Depot

The Dining room at the other end of the kitchen (and also next to my office) wasn't much work at all. I had painted it just a few years ago and it didn't need to be painting again. The new flooring carried through and we bought a new table.

Table: Ikea Gidea
Chairs: Amazon, VisionDecor Furniture 50's Retro Nostalgic Style Blue Bar Stools & Chairs

Next up... Living Room and Conclusion...

Re: Lots of Ikea... My Home Remodeling Project

In conclusion, it was a lot of work over the last month, but worth it. For a while, we didn't see the light at the end of the tunnel, but when we finished this past weekend it was a wonderful feeling. We are NOT at all handy so we are proud for having done everything ourselves (other than the floor).

I'll include some additional pictures here of other rooms in the house. We DID redo the floor in the living room, but other than that it's mostly the same as it was prior to the new floor. Most of my furniture is over 15 years old and has been reupholstered. The coffee table my grandfather MADE when my mother was a kid!

Living Room:

Our crazy master bedroom:
The chairs and bedspread are from Ikea... it was our first experience with the store a few years ago! I painted the mural myself, and also refinished the furniture (which was my great grandmothers).

And yes... we like big TVs!

Thanks for listening all! I hope you enjoy the photos!

Re: Lots of Ikea... My Home Remodeling Project

Wow - I love the soothing calmness of the blue in your office. I have the same desk, but mine is so cluttered! Nice work!

Re: Lots of Ikea... My Home Remodeling Project

Kristen: Thanks! When we first moved into the house in 1999 everything was painting that typical house off-white color. I know some people like it, but as we've added color to our house over the last few years I have come to believe all rooms should have at least SOME color. Of course, hubby and I are pretty color characters, so our rooms reflect that

Dalbrough: Thanks! My mom said the same thing. She didn't visit at all during the work phase so she really got to experience the before and after transformation first-hand... and she kept saying how blown away she was. It seems like a different house!

Susan: Thanks! It's a great desk, isn't it? I had my heart set on it and went through quite a little fiasco tracking down the Vika Artur legs last month, but in the end it was worth it. Actually, my office and playroom are painted the same color... two walls are a light sage green, two walls are a light grey, the ceiling is a slightly darker sage green and the moulding is an almost-white grey. The lighting in the playroom though is very "warm" and the orange accents and darker furniture change the look/ambiance quite a bit. The super light sage and grey is a beautiful color combo, and even though it doesn't seem like it, it's pretty much a neutral enough to go with anything.
