Thank you to all who helped, particularly with design review and ordering panic diversion. We're done, and already have that lived in look. The original was a 9'x13.5' room, with dark brown and pink paisley pattern, one light, and grime above the light line... The house has a long sloping ceiling, and we were looking to emphasize that. We love the new kitchen.
Oh, it's lovely! What a great looooooong counter you have, and I love the spices at the end! What did you use for the backsplash behind the sink and cooktop? (forgive me if it's been discussed elsewhere!) You've done a wonderful job - thank you for sharing!

it's a fabulous kitchen, and i love how you did the backsplash! one question -- is the backsplash just the blue pieces, or did you use clear on the sides? it's just really beautiful.
Just the blue pieces. The white on the side is just paint. Personally, I don't like the look of glass cut around electric sockets, so I kept the glass just to where it was really needed: behind the sink and induction cooktop.
How're you liking the induction? Though I long for a gas stovetop, we may go induction simply because there's no lines around here - we'd have to use propane, and a tank.

very cool backsplash! i really like how it turned out.
yeah, how's the induction? i just read that that was the most energy efficient choice -- because it does something to the pot, but the stove top itself doesn't heat up (and thus use and lose energy) -- can you tell i'm not a scientist? anyway -- how is it for cooking?
Thank you! I really liked the Glasskote pictures but it was too expensive, and my husband found a local distributor for US Color Glass. I'm going to grow herbs in the pots under the window.
I LOVE the induction cooktop: it's so fast and responsive. You're right, Greenie, that it heats the pans directly but not the cooktop, so the cooktop stays relatively cool to the touch. It's been popular in Europe and Asia for years but seems only to have taken off recently in the US. You need pans to which a magnet will stick, and I had some before but I also indulged in 3 posher pans. All of them are outstanding. I boil water for the kids' pasta in under a minute. So it's changed the way I cook: I do most of the prep work before I put the pan on the heat because it really does heat up almost instantly. It's easy to keep clean.
I've had gas, electric coil, electric smoothtop before, and for me the induction beats them all with no contest. I'm one of those people who is never quite comfortable with gas because of the risk potential (especially with small kiddies) but I love to cook, and induction meets my needs exactly.
My husband shows it off to each new visitor but I'm sure the shine appeal will wear off. Maybe he'll start cooking on it too
I replied to your thread on GardenWeb but I will echo it here...what a lovely, happy space! I really love the lines and the fact that it is made to be used. So many "precious" kitchens just feel like you can't really use them to cook in...you can certainly immerse yourself in cooking in your kitchen. It's beautiful.
I would make one tiny little suggestion...that pic at the end wall is hung a bit too high.
