Emily... your kitchen is an inspiration! It looks really incredible, I am glad to have seen your pictures. Leaning back toward Hallarum now thanks to you

Congratulations on a fabulous looking kitchen. Hallarum was my original choice. I'm doing Nexus Brown-Black now but seeing your pics makes me confident that Hallarum would have been awesome too.
I'm pretty sure that DIY renovations are never truly finished - they just get closer and closer. At least, that's how it goes in my house!
So in that vein, I have some updated photos to add. They aren't the best photos - I seem to always get around to taking photos at night, so the lighting isn't so great. Anyway, here we go!
With finished tumbled marble backsplash and the aluminum trim idea that I shamelessly stole from someone here (splatgirl maybe? I can't remember.):
Another view:
New white Rubrik pantries! These weren't a part of our original plan, but I decided we needed more storage (is there ever enough!?). It is two 30" wide, 12" deep pantry cabinets. Now I can't imagine the kitchen without them - I really love them there. Also, I love how they look with the Hallarum. Really, I just love the white Rubrik doors - they're so luminous and soft.
looking back across the island:
Anyway, thanks for looking! And thanks for all the help I got (and continue to get!) here!
thank you so much for posting this retroactive record. I saw your floating "buffet" in flikr months ago--it inspired me to do something similar, though we topped it with a side panel and not a countertop material.
Oh, I love that beluga formica.
*sigh* Hallarum. I never got to see it in person. I had hoped to use it for our kitchen but our dreams were dashed.
Amazing job. The cabinets look beautiful and I second the sentiment to keep open spaces open. The transformation makes me curious about the rest of the house (if the in-laws only knew the potential...).
The quick progress gives me hope that my kitchen remodel won't turn into a month-long saga.
Quick question for you and Splatgirl... I like the aluminum trim idea for under cabinets. I checked lowes.com and homedepot.com but could not find it. Can you let me know the technical name or which department to look in? I like the way it looks and ties in appliances. Also, has anyone tried this method on corners - or just used the trim on straight runs with no turns? Thanks
alycat, to be quite honest, I can't remember exactly where in Home Depot I found it, but it was there. Maybe somewhere in the construction supplies? I kind of wandered the store until I found it! They had different widths, so you'll be able to find exactly what you want.
As for the corner issue, I'm not really sure. We only used it on the straight run. I would imagine that with the right blade, you could use a mitre saw? That would give you a nice clean corner.
Thanks for the compliments everyone! Alycat, you can totally do a renovation that doesn't turn into a month-long saga. I think when you DIY, there is much more motivation to get it done quickly. I mean, contractors get to go home to their intact homes every day - there's a bit less incentive for speed there, you know?
