After 2 years of planning, 9 months of construction (so far) and about a million new grey hairs we're finally at the kitchen install stage.

We've spent the last couple of weeks priming, painting, building cabinets and replacing edge banding.

DH went to Ikea on Monday to place the final Ikea order (doors, internals etc.) got completely confused and ended up coming home with a huge draft order (they added on 1 of everything just to be sure) for me to work on part by part. We're doing a fair bit of customization hence the confusion. Thankfully when he went back yesterday with the final order things went a bit more smoothly.

We're doing Nexus brown-black cabinets. We bought mahogany edge banding and stained it with charcoal stain. It looks pretty good.

Here are the pre-install pics. I'll add more pics as we progress.

I am very eager to see your pictures. We will be doing new construction too and I tentatively plan on using the black-brown but want to see it first.

What are you edge banding and is it necessary?

Can't wait to see pictures! What are you customizing? We're always looking for ideas and aren't quite done with our kitchen yet

Congratulations on beginning!

Poor Dh ! I can just picture the conversation in the Kitchen Department...."Hmmm, I don't know. Just give me one of everything." Glad to hear everything went a little bit better on round two.

Looking good! I'm looking forward to following your progress -- a whole kitchen of Nexus Brown-Black!

Susan

It's not necessary but edgebanding the box frames allowed me to mask them so that they did not "peek out" from behind the doors.

It's extra work, but worth it!

And Gail0202, I'm eagerly awaiting your pics with cabinets and countertops installed! BTW , what did you pick out for the countertops?

Yes, the difference does look worth it. Next question - do you edge band the whole front of the box or just the top - OR, just where it shows through?

Oh, and one more question about the color. Didn't someone find an edge band that matched well enough without having to stain it?

I just edge banded the front edges with black pvc edge banding, no staining, no fussing. Here's the post I set up to explain my process...

I hope this helps.

Liz, we're edgebanding every cabinet and some of the interior shelves too if they "might" show through the doors. As you can see from Goffgirl's pictures it really makes a difference. Goffgirl used a black PVC which seems to work really well, but we were already committed to the staining process by then.

Stacylu, we're using a lot of 30" drawer cabs but replacing the top 2 shallow drawers with the 30" oven cabinet drawer. We also have a 30" cabinet housing a microwave and trimkit that has space for a drawer below it so I had to order the drawers then delete from the order, then order other parts etc. We havejust shy of 10" so I'll use a deep drawer but will have to cut down one of the deep drawer fronts to fit.I'm fudging an 18" pullout by combining parts from the BD18 and the B4D18. We're also doing a trash pullout from one of the 18" cabinets. Finally, I was having a really hard time figuring out how to trim out the oven cabinet on one run and the builtin fridge and pantry cabinet on another run.The regular trim panels just wouldn't look right to me. Finally, after pulling a very late night on Sunday I hit on the idea of using the 3x8 panels. This has the double benefit of giving a thicker panel andallowing me to have the end panels come out level with the door fronts which I feel is a more "modern" look.

Susan, I felt bad for DH because I always planned to do the order myself and have spent the last year living and breathing these forums. Unfortunately we got in a time crunch and it was either DH order it on a break from work or have me do it with the 4 year old, 2 year old and 8 month old in tow. Hmm, no competition.:? He kept calling me in a panic saying "explain the 18" pullout to me again". One call, he told me they didn't do an 18" rationell drawer front. Thankfully I had the "coming in April" thread open on my PC at the time and was able to give them the article#. He was ordering with the dept mgr and she never knew these existed so was pretty happy to have the info. After the 4th call he called to say they were just draft ordering 1 of everything and I was to mark it up with what I needed.

Goffgirl, I'm going with a polished Desert Limestone Caesarstone counter. We're aiming for a very modern look (but hopefully a classic modern rather than clinical modern) and I think this will work really well with the doors.

I just got home to find the birch solid core flush interior doors are installed and trimmed out. I can't wait to get the first cabinets in.
