I want my breakfast room to be an eclectic, kid-friendly kitchen ante-room that can provide a second prep and clean up area, a baking area and a place for the kids to eat lunch and/or do projects and crafts. I want a muted palette that will be calming and cool even with the afternoon sun.

When we bought our house in 2000, we put $10,000 down as a budget to remodel the kitchen. Ha! Somehow that never happened, and in 2005 after living with no dishwasher through 2 babies, we decided that rather than go for an entire overhaul on the kitchen proper, what we could do is add some cabinets, a sink and a dishwasher in the adjoining (and mostly purposeless) breakfast room. We never once ate in there, anyway.
That lead me to my discovery of IKEA cabinets and eventually, to IKEAFANS itself! But I digress...
As seen in the plans tab, there was a large, wider than usual opening between the kitchen and breakfast room, with a slight (4") stepdown. We decided to take advantage of that quirk and wrapped the cabinets and countertop right around the corner and into the kitchen, allowing for symmetry of the cabinets in the breakfast room (12", 36", 12" rather than 12", 36" or 12", 24", 12" which wouldn't have fit my bargain basement ($120) 36" Kohler sink), a Perfekt cabinet just for the kids and their snacks and paraphernalia, a lowered countertop area, and storage for a necessary stepstool.
2 side cabinets placed at counter-height create a hutch look. 2 suspension rails were used to achieve this look. We created our own 'valance' to hide the undercabinet lighting fixture by painting a 1x3 Benjamin Moore's Simply White. Perfect match!
