Discuss Laurie and Kevin's Nexus BB Bathroom on IKEAFANS.com. We're Personalizing the IKEA Experience. Laurie and Kevin's Nexus BB Bathroom - Project Blogs are returning - better than ever! Tabsets and Photosets and Notes, oh my! Forum open for POSTING!.
We are ready to roll on our mstr. bathroom reno. I know the layout, but I need some serious help with locating all the products for the bathroom. I really thought this would be the fun part, but it's become a nightmare for me because I don't know where to look! I think it's been hard for me because I've not only had some serious health issues the past few months, but I've been so stressed from my step-father who died in Dec. and my dad who I've been caring for almost dying in March (his mind is pretty much gone now). Any help at all will be really appreciated. I'm hoping if I can describe what I have in mind, you could help me "tweek" it or come-up with better solutions. I apologize for this being so incredibly long.
It's a complete rip-out to the studs. I have our cabinets for the vanity from IKEA - white boxes & Nexus BB doors. Here's what's planned for the layout:Rectangular bathroom 5'6" x 13'5" with 5ft pocket doors entering along the 13'5" wall. When you enter, the vanity will be in the middle, with the shower to the left of the vanity and the toilet to the right (vent issues prevent us from relocating the toilet to another location). The shower will be 36"
w
x 5'6" long, with a bench seat or corner seat; a short wall between the shower & vanity to contain the shower controls as you reach in the shower (to prevent getting a shot of cold water!), and electrical outlet on the vanity side. I was thinking this wall would be approx. 42" high and glass from there up. ITo the right of the vanity will be another short wall with electrical outlet and glass from there up (to allow light to come through the glass block window that is above where the toilet will sit.) We will have a 41" wide space where the toilet will sit. I realize we don't need this much, but it would drive me crazy to not have the toilet centered under the location of the window.
I have 161" to work with. Measurements from left to right:36" wide shower, 5" short wall, 1" filler, 72" vanity, 1" filler, 5" short wall, and 41" for toilet.
We are having a company come out to look at the space tomorrow night. They are willing to work with us to let us do part of the work. We'll rip out, and we could hang drywall and paint, as well as assemble the vanity. But we've never done tilework, and we need to hire a plumber and electrician. We also have to add another heat vent and relocate the current one which will end-up behind the toilet!
I prefer neutral colors and add pizazz with accessories, so I would prefer to not add "color" in the tilework. I like white, lt. or drk. greys, and some browns are "ok". I like white subway tile w/ a square edge, and rectangular large white & lt. grey glass tile. But I can't afford an entire bathroom of glass tile. I was visualizing a large frameless mirror over the vanity with a single contemporary sconce on each side, with white glass tile below, above and along side the mirror, perhaps continuiing uninterrupted into the shower along that vanity/shower wall. But, having white glass tile and white subway tile isn't going to give any kind of "pop". I'm really at a mental block with this issue. I love the tile in this bathroom (scroll down) BLING! Bathroom done... Lots of photos. - Bathrooms Forum - GardenWeb but.......of course I can't afford that much of it. If I can't do the glass tile, then I'd like to do very large "white-ish" tiles over the floors and walls to give a cohesive look. Preferably something that is impervious to water.
I would like a white countertop for the vanity and a rectangular/square sink. Possibly Silestone?
The vanity is IKEA Nexus BB: qty. of [4] 18" door fronts) Left to Right: 18" hamper pullout, 18" pullout with drawers behind the door, 18" for small sink base, 18" pullout with drawer behind the door. This is our only purchase so far.
PLEASE, PLEASE Help me locate resources to purchase everything!!!!
Wall & Floor Tile, countertop, white rectangular sink, chrome faucets, etc., a quiet bath fan, recessed lighting, contemporary sconces, shower doors/glass (not sliding) (clear w/ partial frosted). Of course, I would love to have shower body sprays, etc., but not sure that it's in the budget. We have up to $14,000 to work with. I realize that's not alot, but it's alot for us.
A taller toilet, electric floor heating system, and possibly a shallow recessed cabinet to fit between studs. We really want to do a seamless shower with no ledge to step over. My husband likes this: Quick Drain USA Linear strip shower drain - low profile clannel shower drain and wall slot drains for bathroom deck and pool
The cost is not cheap, so not sure he's going to get it. Not sure if we can do a seamless shower with only a 36" wide shower. I don't need water flowing into the bathroom.
Hello, Laurie. Just wanted to say I'm sorry you've been having such a difficult time. If you read the GW bath forum, there's an awful lot of useful advice there from Bill Vincent and Mongo if you want to try
DIY
tiling (I'd never tackle drywall myself--you're way braver than I am there--but tiling isn't so difficult). Also, while a lot of what happens there is pretty high end, there have been some awfully cost-effective listings for glass tile, too, if you search around there.
Pharoah's bathroom always makes me swoon. Thanks for a chance to see it again.
Wow, that bathroom you posted is beautiful. I'm not so good with sources for bathrooms because I've done mine pretty plain and use some discount local places for tile. One tile I've seen that I really like, though on the pricey side is this:
Thanks to both of you. I've been searching online for a couple weeks now and to say that I'm overwhelmed is an understatement. I'm so afraid to make the wrong choices.
I searched the Costco "Korel" tiles. They have alot of great stuff for good prices. I may be giving them a call.
Right now we've completed the framing & drywalling of the 15ft of closets in the bedroom. Haven't got the closet doors up yet, so it's been hard for me to visualize what new bedding I want for our new bed. I really wanted a white, leather tufted headboard with dark wood bed, but couldn't find one for under $2,000 that I liked. So, I went with a straight back, black tufted headboard with med/dk wood around the leather and wood platform with rails and footboard. Not my 1st choice, but it's incredibly thick and sturdy and got it for under $1,500. As much as I think a bold color like this........ Designer Portfolio : DP BEDROOMS : Home & Garden Television
would look incredible with the bed with white curtains on the window on each side of the bed, I'm AFRAID!!!! I get tired of color. Weird, I know. But, I do love this photo.
As you can see, I'm still planning the bedroom as well. We ordered our Dunlop latex mattress, so we are currently sleeping on twin mattresses on the floor. I wish I had the money to just have someone take over and know what I want!!
Laurie - sorry to hear you haven't been well, and that your family has suffered so.
That is one GORGEOUS bathroom! I'm stunned.
How many square feet of tile do you need for your bathroom? I have some clear, frosted glass tile (looks greenish) in multiple shapes/sizes (though uniformly large, like 3x12 12x12 6x6). It's been a while since I've had them out, so I might be mistaken about exact sizes, and I have no idea how much I have, but if they would work for you, I'd be happy to work something out.
I'll see if I can dig up a picture if you're interested.
Thank you, and I've missed everyone. Define "greenish"? A picture would be outstanding. I'm not sure I'm willing to commit to a color, so that's why I was hoping to get white glass. If it's barely colored, then I may be interested if there's enough tile. Well, we're just in the design/planning stage, so nothing has been cast in stone yet. But, we want to get the ball rolling soon.
The only thing I have is the Nexus BB cabinets in boxes. The vanity will be 74" long - (4) 18" cabs. and (2) 1" fillers.
I ordered samples today from Costco's "Korel" glass tiles. The clear glass mosaic's are $7 sf. and the clear glass subway's are $14 sf. It figures I prefer the more expensive! Anyway, the customer service lady from Korel said the clear glass mosaic has a hint of blue. I should have those within 7 days.
Judging by what she told me, I need approx. 150 sf. for the shower area. That doesn't sound right to me. I'll have to figure that one out. Behind the vanity will be mostly mirror, but I could use some on the backsplash below the mirror and approximately 6" x 5ft on each end of the mirror above the vanity.
Anyway, on another topic, I've been wanting a mirrored nightstand and I found one on clearance that was all mirrored marked down to $100.00 from $200.00 I saw the very same looking nightstand (only it was 30" wide) online that was almost $500. It's hefty! It's 24" wide by 17" deep with 1 drawer and a door area with shelves. You should have seen me when I spotted it. I felt like those crazy people that stand out in the cold at 4:00 a.m. at the day after Thanksgiving sales (apologies to anyone that does that!!!!) Watch out people, this is mine!!!!!
Only the one above is 30" wide with two doors on bottom, and mine is 24" wide with one door below the drawer.
I'm not crazy about the antiqueing color on the trim. Does anyone think that it would look good if I painted that trim part in black? I want it to look more contemporary.
My king size headboard is 68" tall. It's a black leather "square" tufted headboard (not shiny at all) with med./dark wood trim around it and wood rails and low footboard. The box spring mattress will fit down inside the footrail area, so only the mattress will be exposed, so I can tuck my bedding. I would say the headboard is a transitional look - a cross between traditional and contemporary. If I put my mirrored table on one side of the bed, what would look good on the other? It has to be 30" or less wide, 28" to 30" tall and no more than 17" deep. I'll have all those espresso with frosted glass doors all down the side of the room next to this table. A 36" window will be behind each nightstand on each side of the bed. My plans were to do light bedding and curtains to obviously bring some "light" to the room. Then add punches of color with pillows and a throw at the end of the bed. Any ideas?
The headboard width is going to go in front of the window area about 4" on each side. I thought about having more of the curtain go behind the headboard like this pic. to bring the light color behind the headboard. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_FfZMBBaCF8...urq+venice.jpg
Thanks for any help you all can give. My head is pounding from trying to pull ideas together. Why does it look so much easier when you're giving advice to others?
PS. I realize this is becoming more than a "bathroom" thing. Should I put this somewhere else?
Hey, Laurie - sorry for the delay!! This is a celery green tile. I'll have to see if I can dredge up some old pictures and/or troop out to the Chicken Shed where they're stored and bring them in. I might just do that...
Why don't we move this thread over to Project Blogs? You've been around long enough to remember the old Progress

I have 13 cases of a glass tile in 6 boxes. The tile is celery-green with white backing.
In one box, there are 30 tiles that are 7 7/8" x 7 7/8" (aka 8x8's). In the second box, there are 4 cases of 30 tiles each that are 3 15/16" x 3 15/16" for a total of 120 4"x4" tiles.
The other 4 boxes each contain 2 cases of 30 tiles each that are 3 15/16" x 7 7/8" (hereafter known as 4"x8") for a total of 240 tiles at that size.
So, 30 8"x8" tiles, 120 4"x4" tiles and 240 4"x8" tiles. I'm sure someone can figure out the square footage!
I took some pictures on each of 3 surfaces - a warm wood tone, white (UGLY formica counter) and black (soapstone counter) so you could get a feel of how it might work in various situations. It has a pebbled texture that I'd forgotten about - gives it a nice interesting feel.
Here's pics:

You can see the white backing on the piece of one of the large tiles that's broken.
Let me know if you're interested in them, and we can figure out the details.
Ok, Laurie - your sample tiles will be shipping in the morning.
I found the manufacturer's website: Island Stone Dealer Resources Website - PebbleTile.com The boxes that this tile are in say the color is "Reed", but that looks entirely too green on my computer screen, so reserve judgment. To me, in person, this looks much more like Frangipani, or Spa or Spring. The good news is, you can probably get edging pieces if you need them.
Let me know when you get them, and what your verdict is!
