Updating Albert's Mom's 1970 kitchen in Adel birch
While in the midst of the finishing details in my kitchen renovation here in Paris, France, I had some fun coming up with a few ideas about how to renovate my Mom's kitchen back in New Jersey. I learned a lot about the differences between
Faktum
and
Akurum
cabinets, the different modifications possible, and the great community here at Ikeafans.
On a short trip back in April I brought my Mom to the
Elizabeth
, NJ IKEA to have a look at the kitchen displays. They were actually in poor shape because of an ongoing renovation - but my Mom, who is usually a pretty cautious woman, declared "if we don't do this renovation right now I'll never do it!".
So there started an adventure that is still ongoing to this day.
I'll start back with a few of the original designs. The first is close to the layout of the original eat-in kitchen, which is open to the den (originally the dining room), and has a passage off to the living room and master bedroom. A baseboard radiator along an entire interior wall complicated matters, until it was decided to change it for a different radiator.
The second plan opened things up a big, and kept a small eat-in counter. But it had a lot of corners and compromises.
About this time I discovered Blum's Dynamic Space design ideas for kitchens, and I tried to apply them. The last two designs are close, but ultimately the final design won out for it's large continuous expanse of counter and feeling of openness.
Stay tuned to see how things develop, with cabinet installation by Ikeafans' own Chuck.
Faktum definition
Faktum is the European equivalent of Akurum; that is, the fitted, frameless, component kitchen cabinet line, which when paired with door and drawer fronts as well as interior accessories makes up the full kitchen cabinet system.
Akurum definition
Akurum is the North American equivalent of FAKTUM; that is the fitted, frameless, component kitchen cabinet line, which when paired with door and drawer fronts as well as interior accessories makes up the full kitchen cabinet system.
Fabulous!! It looks great and will function beautifully!! I too am a big fan of wall of tall! Great work, and we love a person able to spread IKEA love across multiple continents and in different cabinet systems- GO!!!
Oh for pities sake, how did I miss that Chuck installed?? Beautiful of course!!
You all here at Ikeafans were a great resource while I was planning and building both my kitchen and now my Mom's.
Even though I came up with this 'Wall of Tall' plan as a variant of Blum's dynamic space plans (wrapping part of the cooking zone into the consumables storage zone), I tried to steer my Mom towards another design that gave landing space to both the refrigerator and oven:

In the end she over-ruled me in favor of the Wall of Tall and the large span of counterspace. I think she was right!
The original kitchen and some of my first plans had a lot of wall cabinets on the stovetop wall, but stripping them out really opened up the space. And there is plenty of storage in all of the drawers, the pantry, and the few wall cabinets that remain.
I think the lighting was also key to making this a really beautiful space, we ended up layering general lighting from the overhead cans, ambient lighting from the over-cabinet fluorescents, and task lighting from the under-cabinet fluorescents and over-sink mini-pendants.
One thing I wasn't so excited by - the fairly short horizontal reach of the Ikea Bagvik faucet isn't really enough for the massive scale of the Domsjo double sink - the water hits behind the drain and is pretty far back, a long reach.
It doesn't help that I've got quite used to the flexibility of the Kohler Karbon faucet in my kitchen.
Probably the Bagvik is a candidate for early replacement if I find a reasonably-priced alternate with a much longer reach.
