So we just got back from Ikea
Etobicoke
. I was supposed to meet
DH
in the parking lot at 3:30 but mom was late getting home to watch the kids. It was good because DH was late biking to the store...in the end I was later, no problems though.
I'm so glad I listened to you guys at Ikeafans because it takes quite a long time to do the order. The best thing to do is go on a weekday, preferrably during the day before 5. The manager of the kitchen dept. even said that on the weekend people sometimes have a four hour or more of a wait and they even have to turn people away because they can't serve everyone that day.
When we got there it was a half hour wait...no biggie. We got an amazing Ikean (Dennis). In the end I had to add some supports beside the
DW
so I had to sacrifice some drawer space and went down from a 30" drawer to a 24". That's ok, I can put in a custom drawer for my baking sheets.
We used 5 pallet carts in order to get all our stuff. Two from self-serve and three from the picked stuff, and that doesn't even include all the stuff that needed to be ordered (doors and cover panels). There were two items not available in the self-serve area. I'm hoping they come in by the time the doors are in, otherwise I'll make a trip to the next closest Ikea and try and get them there.
With our gift cards we got our countertop and there was $80 to spare. Unfortunately, that won't even cover the knob/handles. Oh well, you can't have everything . But I convinced DH to get the larger panels for the fridge for that built-in look.
I can't believe I was thinking of doing this myself. I'm so glad I waited for DH, I never would have been able to do it on my own. The Domsjo on it's own weighs 124 lbs. (according to the box). I helped put the pantry on the roof and the sink in the trailer. DH dropped the pantry on my fingers once. I hope my fingernails don't turn black.
Here are pics to prove we fit in in the Jetta...and the trailer towed behind. (It was dark by the time we got home, sorry for the dark pics) DH came home with me (his legs needed the break from biking) so we strapped his bike on top of the full trailer. Because I didn't want anything to break we drove 40 km/
h
all the way home.
Tomorrows job...empty the kitchen, take pics and see if I can freecycle some of my old cabinets.

Yay! So this is the start of your Project Blog! How exciting!
To get the most out of it, upload your photos to the
galleries
in 'sets', such as Plans, Inspiration, Before, Construction, and After - then you can associate them with tabs at the top of this thread, and they'll be available for everyone to see throughout your project. The first post will be at the top of every page no matter how many pages your project lasts through. Plus you can fill in your Mission Statement and provide details about your fixtures and fittings right up at the top.
re: Building an Adel White Kitchen, One Day at a Time
You're welcome! You can always just attach or drop in images that are one-offs or don't really fit into a set/tab. Like, I don't think we have a tab for 'bringing it home'!!
LOL

Wow, that is one full load! I wouldn't even dare try that in my truck; 4 cylinder + heavy load = not much acceleration to speak of!
Of course, the fun is only starting ... as daunting as it is to see that huge pile of boxes, just keep telling yourself that what it really is is your nice new kitchen.

re: Building an Adel White Kitchen, One Day at a Time
The fun has begun! About half of my kitchen is gone. The fridge is still plugged in. The dishwasher is disconnected, as is the stove. The sink is gone...literally. We put it on the curb along with the faucet and since garbage day is tomorrow, someone has scavenged it. I hope they can use it...it's better than it ending up in the landfill.
I've emptied all the cabinets except our plates/mugs and the wine glasses. That is tomorrows job. I don't know how I'm going to do it with a 3 yr old and a 16 month old at my feet. A construction zone is not really kid friendly.
The kids have no idea what is going on. We didn't really tell them. They were in bed when we started demolition. But the child gate is up and they can't get in.
I have no idea where the kitchen table is going to go...perhaps in the living room?
This afternoon I went over the pick list to make sure we got everything. We made a mistake picking drawer pullout covers. We got 2 of one and 3 of another, but it should have been the otherway around. So I'll have to return one and buy another. Hopefully that makes sense to everyone and not just me.
I think I'm going to order my faucet after I pay my credit card bill. It should be a scary one since the kitchen will be on it soon.

I hear you. I'm doing deep breathing exercises right now pretty much all the time. I'm not actually THAT uptight about money, but I'm probably kidding myself. I just try to avoid it being a BIG part of my life...right up until I get "good ideas and inspiration" and hire a dumpster. Then I do the deep breathing. In through the nose, out through the mouth...in though the nose, out through the mouth...slowly so you don't tip over.
