Hey all, you may remember my original thread a couple months back as we planned our kitchen reno. We changed plans and layouts about a thousand times but have settled on a layout and have begun the great crusade towards the promised land. We're still looking for input and have a couple questions on the layout (see below).
1. Any obvious issues with the layout? As in the other thread, we went over everything about a billion times and this is the layout we;re going with, but my concern is whether there are any glaring issues with spacing (along the range wall mostly). Also, the cabs on the panty wall (aside from the 1 base cab) will be cut down or bumped out to be 18", so as to be a uniform depth.
2. Is my setup for the upper blind corner correct? Do I have the upper filler in the right spot and size (I gave it 1.5") Not sure if this is too much/too little.
3. How do I install/hack the blind cabinet's hinges so that the cabinet opens with the window side open (
ie
the same way Dalbrough did hers). Do I just install an additional piece of cover and drill replacement hinge holes?
Just to keep you carnivoires happy, here are some progress pictures; obviously starting with the before pics. Existing hardwood will be extended throughout and ceiling refinished to be one continuous panel (no stub wall), as well as recessed halogen lighting added.
Taking out one side of drywall and starting some exploratory holes on range wall (drywall is pretty much gone in that area now too).
Wall begins to fall!
Temporary kitchen with old cabinets strewn in random spots to make it livable as work progresses:
Yes, the temporary layout is nearly identical to the final plan (minus a whole swag of cabinets and counters), and its FANTASTIC.
Had some friends over on the weened and entertaining was 100% different; we are so used to having the cook isolated in the kitchen. Whoever suggested the island is my hero.

That's going to be a great kitchen! Losing that wall is life-changing, isn't it?
Refresh my memory....any seating planned for the island? I'm asking, because it looks as if you have lots of room between the island and the refrigerator....and the dishwasher and refrigerator, too. Is there room enough to add 12" pullout next to the

Yes, I was also going to suggest adding a little length to the counter and creating an island overhang. But I thought you might be wanting to keep the window from being crowded.
From an aesthetic standpoint, I would also suggest losing the blind corner and just having cabinets on that one wall. It's a bit cleaner, and would allow you to do two glass cabinets.

1. Adding Length to Counter: While I agree on adding some length to the window counter (lets call it that), I don't want to encroach the window too much. Ideally, I think I'd like to leave at least 10" between a run and the window.
Adding a 12" cabinet at the end of the run leaves only ~4" to the side of the cabinet.
It would work if I swapped in a 30" sink cab (from the 36" currently), but I have the feeling a 36" sink cab would make sink installation easier (I think were leaning towards a double bowl undermounted).
2. Adding Island Overhang: We've thought about this, but because the way the island encroaches onto the main flowthrough/stairs, adding anything more than a couple inches (out towards dining table) would make the pass through (between stairs/pole) and the island too small.
Another option might be to elongate the island to ~60", but not sure how that would fit, may try moving the island tonight.
3. Removing upper blind: While I agree it would look better, The only problem with removing the blind corner is that it makes that remaining cabinet really hard to use.
Since it would be a 36" cabinet, there would be 2 doors, with the closest one opening away from the user and the second door far away in the corner. I think a blind makes it much more easy to access.

And all that natural light that can now flow from the kitchen windows into the rest of the living space...glorious. I think you're going to love this when it's finished.

I second Abandon's suggestion to lose the blind corner in favour of cabs straight to the wall. If you replace the 36-inch cabinet with two 18-inchers, the doors can be installed to open in whichever direction is most convenient.

I never thought of putting 2- 18" cabs with both doors opening towards the user! Might look a bit odd, but it might be one of those "compromise" things the wife keeps yammering about
By popular demand:
1. No Blind corner (2x 18's)
2. 12" pullout besides

. (Reduced Sink to 30" cab ).
3. Enlongated island to 60" (2x 30" cabs from 2x 24")
