My ideal sink would be a double bowl (1 large bowl and 1 -1/2 to 3/4 bowl) with drains at the rear to free up undercabinet space, built in drainboard but undermount to fit a 36" Ikea sink cab. Does anyone know if such a thing exists? Thx Tumbilli
Tell me about the drainboard and the undermount...would the drainboard be integrated into the countertop, like solid surface or stone? Sounds cool.
What attracts about the two bowls? I mean in general- I had one in my old kitchen, the kind with the little bowl which was shallower and had the disposal. I didn't find it as useful as I thought I would, it seemed kind of hard to have to think about which bowl to scrape things into. Seems silly, but it was true for me. It seems to me that the double bowl sinks really come from a time when we did all our dishes in the sink- one bowl for soapy water, the other for rinse water.
It drives me nuts when I can't put a pan flat in a sink- and again, I don't care what size the pan is, I just want it to fit in the sink. So, I am really looking forward to my super single!
I'm with you as far as a large bowl that holds a big pan. The sink I have now has a supersize bowl with a smaller bowl and a dispoasal. I love it as I can fit pretty well any size pan in it and have the disposal in the smaller sink which I find very useful. Problem is it's old, chipped, surface mount and RED! If I could have this same configuration with an integral drainboard and undermounted I'd be happy. I did find a single undermount but not a double. I would imagine that the sink itself would fit into the sink cab but the drainboard would extend into the adjacent cabinet which in my case is an 18" 3 drawer base. To accommodate the cutout and the board you would lose the upper drawer. But I'm only guessing here. I really have no idea. The other option would be to have an integral drainboard/trivet thingey built into a concrete countertop on a slope next to a double bowl sink. One thing I'm sure of and that is I hate regular drainracks but unfortunately DH and I rarely dry dishes and put them away. They usually just sit there and drip dry until one of us can't fit anything else in there. The last pic is very cool. It's kind of a breakfast bar but I thought something like this behind the sink would make a great drain rack.
Erock, If you were really a brand-name snob you so wouldn't be HERE!
Yes, I like to think that's true. And "brand fixation" is such a kinder way to put it! Because if you're design conscious you can easily get into the mindset that only a particular brand will get the details of the sink (or what have you) CORRECT enough for you to like it and think it's cool! I think that making a huge purchase like a new kitchen makes you reexamine your relationship to consumerism (i.e., your own consumerism) at every turn. It makes me look back at prior big purchases and evaluate which ones still seem like they were a good idea and where we went overboard.
My "ideal sink" is at least 28 x 16, single bowl, offset drain, and 8 or 9 inches deep (10" is going too far!). A combination of any three are easy to find. I finally gave in and eliminated the offset drain. I haven't ordered that sink from Sierra yet but have every intention of doing so next week (out of town right now).
I love that built-in drain board in a concrete countertop with the raised steel ridges!! I've decided to give up the old folding wood IKEA dish rack - it's beloved, but it's tired (even a new one). I hope (stop laughing!) to keep that area more clear in the future new kitchen.
Erock, great reply. I'm NOT laughing at your hope that the new kitchen will motivate you to keep it cleaner...I have a long list of home improvements that I hope will make me a better housekeeper! My dream is that a dressing room with an stacked washer/dryer will resolve my laundry issues...but I totally agree that well designed spaces are easier to keep clean and organized. However, I haven't figured out if well designed spaces will overcome my personal issues.
