It depends a lot on your Ikea. For some people they wait while the items are pulled for them. For me, we had to pull them all ourselves (Seattle Ikea). But I suspect the actual ordering part (bringing in the idea of what you want and creating a draft order) is similar.
Here is a thread I started on my ordering experience: $2500 of cabinets in my car...
And reading the blogs will reveal a lot, as well. Maybe you will even find someone who ordered from your same Ikea, to get a better idea of what it will be like for you!
On the Brink,
Hi! Welcome to IKEAFans! I'm originally from Bartow but I am now in Tallahassee.
January 1 we bought some kitchen cabinets and some PAX wardrobes from the Orlando IKEA. If I remember correctly, they pulled the kitchen items for us, but we had to pull the PAX stuff (well, DH did with help from an IKEAn.) Go up to the Kitchens department - if you have a list, that will make it quicker since the IKEAn will not have to look up as much.
I can't tell you how long it will take to place the order - we only had a few things to finish out our kitchen since we had ordered most of the kitchen from IKEA Direct last year. Do allow a good amount of time for them to pull your order, especially if you do not get there early in the day. I'd suggest a weekday morning if you can make it rather than a weekend or holiday like we did.
A good suggestion is to get there early, place your order and go downstairs and pay for it - they will not pull it until it is paid. Then you can shop around for accessories (drawer dividers, handles, etc.), get lunch and hang out while they finish pulling your order. I think it took over an hour for them to pull ours, but as I said we were there on New Year's Day and it was a madhouse.
We send so many people back to the show rooms who circumvent our natural path and wind up cutting into the selfserve area. When you go upstairs, find the dept with all the fancy stuff you want on display and talk it over with them. Depending on what you want they will create two lists for you. One being a booking (cash & carry list), this booking will printed for our warehouse to be pulled for you. The second part will be a shopping list, this one you will have to go into our selfserve area and pull yourself.
My suggestion is, get both lists. Pay for the Booking "Cash & Carry" list first so the warehouse can begin to pull your order. Then re visit our market place and self serve warehouse and grab you shopping list items.
Plan to be there 1-3 hours...... grab some meatball and ice cream, stay away from the panzarotti if they still serve it there. Oh and dont bring anyone that will slow you down or hinder your trip, ive seen it too many times and people get beyond frustrated trying to juggle their attention.
Other than that, good luck with you furture purchase.

So are you saying it's best to NOT do things like use the Akurum Parts Map and the spreadsheets that some use? That I should just go in, prehaps with my Planner print out, and have the staff person help me identify precisely what I'll need?

newly hooked on Ikea!
Yes exactly. They have computers speficicly desgined to map everything out for you. Just bring your dimentions and a good idea of what you want, and let them plan it out for you. This way you get the exact amount of door, hinges, suspension rails, dampers, ect... all that good stuff. we've been getting new kitchen iteams all the time, so there might be stuff we have your not even aware of. I mean if you feel you want to do all that go nuts, but ultimatley you need them do book out and plan everything for you. So let them do most of the work.
Just bring your dimentions and a good idea of what you want, ....
I think this is the part where many people like to plan it out at home (or here on IKEAfans) ahead of time. To get the most functional and pleasing plan, it takes more time and/or experience than the average Ikean in Kitchens will be able to spare. You may get someone really talented and with tons of time on their hands or you may get the new guy/gal on a busy day or anywhere in between. For most people, a kitchen is a big enough deal to want to do some serious planning. Obviously, if you are planning any modifications or non-standard items, you'll also want your research and notes, part numbers, etc.
I have to agree- while the many IKEAns who have helped me were friendly and doing their best, if I had not done my homework here I would not have been able to execute 3 drawer 36" and 30" base cabinets which make up the majority of my kitchen. I pretty much had to insist that I knew what I was talking about.
Again, super nice people who wanted to help- just less informed than the collective hive mind of IKEFANS!
There seem to be differences in the way you order at each of the stores. My local IKEA would not work from the planner file or from the list generated from the planner ... I had to fill in an order form which listed each cabinet and the quantity of each ... from that order form the kitchens IKEAn would then enter the order into the computer ... and each of the cabinets morphed into their 5 or 6 part numbers.
I agree with Kelly and Gloria - it's truly best to do the planning up front and have your layout decided upon - that process is actually quite lengthy - as you really need to think about how you use your kitchen, what you need to store ... how you work, what your needs and desires are and then factor all that into your layout and design.
