What can I fit in a pickup truck?

I will be staying at my folks next week, just a few miles from IKEA (5 hours away from home but closest IKEA is 2.5 hours away and it would be a special trip). I have a full size 07 Toyota Tundra pickup truck with a 6.5 foot long box, with tailgate down I have 8 feet or so of supported truck floor., 50 inches wide at narrowest place 22 inches high bed but could go a bit over with tie downs. Lots of power and suspension in this truck but I can't picture how much space the IKEA cabinets will take up (with doors). Not getting countertop there, only other purchase may be a sink, perhaps a faucet...

I don't want to drag a trailer on such a trip if I don't need to, so do you think all will fit in the back of the truck? I am buying
24 x 88 pantry, 15x88 pantry, 2-12 inch base pullouts, 36 sink base, 37 inch corner base, 24 inch base with shelves, 2x 36 inch 4drawer bases, 2x12 inch bases, 2x18 inch bases, 2x24 inch wall cabs (high), 18 inch by 36 inch over fridge deep cab, 30 inch over oven wall cab.
so, basically 17 cabs altogether plus doors (and some rationalle drawers).

Any thoughts on this....I like the old IKEA commercial of the little car going over all the steep hills with all you see being all the IKEA stuff strapped to the roof, but 5 hour drive, not happening.

Should fit - I've done more with a similar configuration...put the smaller pieces inside the cab.

Ditto to what torrus said. I had 13 cabinets and a similar size pickup and had enough room to add an additional 4+ cabinets. Good luck!

Re: What can I fit in a pickup truck?

My own kitchen-in-embryo is 14 cabinets. The store was able to provide weights (Ikea kitchen planner doesn't). Your big kitchen might run up to 800 kg. You might be careful to ask at the store about weights and know your truck's weight ratings (my unsubstantiated guess is that if my Ford Focus will take 300 kg plus a scrawny adult, your truck should do the entire load, provided you don't find an irresistible sofa in as-is).

The box should fit the load, provided packing's done carefully. Straps, no bungee cords.

Re: What can I fit in a pickup truck?

I got my cabs last week so thought I'd update this in case anyone was searching for similar info. I ended up with 20 cabinets including 2 pantries. I may have been able to fit everything in but it would have been a tall stacked load because of the many drawers I have. My dad has a mid-sized Dodge Dakota and came and picked up all the drawers and a few other items. For the 5-hour drive back home I decided to leave the drawers and a few cover panels/doors at my folks place. the forecast was for heavy rain and I have a hard flip cover that is at the height of the top of my truck bed. I ended up being able to pack everything under the cover except of course for the drawers, and maybe 5 ot 6 cover panels/doors.

The drawers are of course bulky and I have about 20 of them ranging in size from the small ones for my 12" pullout to 36 inch base cabinets (2 such cabs so 4 such drawers).

By the way, instead of paying $150 for the 3x8 panel, I got one with very few marks on it for $15...the location of the marks will be tight against the adjacent cabs or facing the side of the fridge so no problem there...I had to look closely to see the marks anyways.

Re: What can I fit in a pickup truck?

Thanks for updating us - I'm sure this will be helpful to other people planning long-distance trips. And great news on the cover panel!!!

It's probably good to not have the drawers with you anyway - I meant to leave mine all off until after installation and countertops so that they wouldn't get destroyed by granite dust. But it's just TOO tempting to put them in and see how well they work! So now I'm going to have to tape the heck out of them to protect them during granite work.
