in store customer service

Long time Ikea shopper here, for over 20 years! I really love the Ikea concept, and have recommended their product to numerous families I know.

Today, I have had the rudest customer service experience in the Tempe , AZ IKEA and just wanted to share. I walked up to the customer service area before the cashiers, and was helped by Chris. He was entering my order, and didnt realize that 2 of the main components were out of stock. My order was for cabinentry, consisting of 3 components, and 2 were out of stock. Cabinetry consists of the unit, doors, hanging hardware, drawers, and legs. As 2 main components, consisting of 5 units was not in stock, I did not place the order. I was not going to purchase doors, drawers, hardware and legs for cabinents that may or may not come in at no guaranteed date. So I polietly informed Chris, I would not be making this purchase today as they were out of stock of the main components. His response was to slam his keyboard with his hands, throw his pencil at the desk, and say quite loudly and angrily to his coworkers standing nearby, "I'm going to lunch", and just took off while we were still standing there. I was surprised at such a reaction, he helped us, or more correctly did data entry, for about 15 minutes.

As I said, big Ikea fan. Went home and placed order on Internet for the 36 pieces costing over $1k.

Re: in store customer service

We have all read about people who got to the very end of their projects and something that was out of stock that they were waiting on to complete the project never came back into stock, so I don't blame you for not wanting to complete the purchase with missing components.

I sort of sympathize with the associate...he may have put off his break to help you and who knows what the abandonment might have done to his metrics, but he should not have taken it out on you.

I just hope that online ordering gets you all of the pieces you need; I don't trust Ikea's stocking strategy, and their inventory is too often wrong. Unless I can get all of the pieces in my hot little hands right when I want them, I reschedule the purchase.
