Ikea Elizabeth NJ

Was there on Saturday. Great store - with lots of ktichen models on display. Though - I have to say - they showed a lot less creativity in their display models than I've seen on this site. Best Ikea displays I've seen - the Ikea near SF - they had outragous displays with concrete counters and the like.

There is a shortcut to kitchens - up the stairs - past the living room furniture and when you see the room with the office cabinets go through the little door behind that area - and your in kitchens.

The Ikean on duty - Don. Very helpful in placing the draft order. He even forced me to look at display cabinets to understand exactly what I was buying.

I handed him two IkeaFans cards - and he thought I was a "designer" working for a client - and i let him know - no I'm just a weirdo who found an online community that helps you with a huge DIY project.

I did have to spend more time discussing the mods so he would understand them as he was definately more confortable ordering just the catalog pieces. Dulci's pantry mod threw him for a loop for about 2 minutes till he figured it out.

He was very impressed with the cabinet mod to reduce the drawer sizes.

Time I arrived: 9:00 - store had just opened - parking lot was empty - got the draft order done in 20 minutes.

What I brought: I had mapped out each part of the kitchen on excel worksheets. So - for the Wall of cabinets I had one drawing showing that wall with all the order numbers underneath including things like legs, plinth, handles, etc. Made the process very simple.

Events that occurred while there: an irate customer coming in and having an emotional breakdown because the decor pieces weren't included in their order -which the ikean he had handled with applomb.

Only suprises:
- Don told me that the 24 inch drawer cabinet had been tried in the states - but didn't go well and now wasn't being offerred anymore. (Quick plan change to accomodate - luckily I went with alternatives).
- And I was told that (either the door bumpers or drawer dampers - one of the two) were not available for delivery - you have to pick them up.
- Lastly that the 6" numerar legs were "non-standard" and would create too high base cabs (but its the only way I can keep my wall of cabinets looking like a wall of cabinets due to my Fridge height - otherwise the cabinet over the fridge won't match the cabinets next to it.

Recommendation: Don't order the bacon at the resteraunt with your eggs - not good.

Total cost of kitchen: 4k - not including counters or rationell pieces for all the interiors (Don recommends getting the kitchen setup then buying those pieces).

Congratulations on getting your kitchen ordered! That's too bad about the 24" base cabinets...I need one! Or, the space between my penninsula and the wall of tall just got shorter by 6".

Sounds like you had a helpful IKEAn and went really well prepared- good for you!

Thanks for the bacon tip!

24" drawers

Kellybmw,

Don't take Don's word on the 24 cabinet - I searched the forums here and found posts that indicated its not a common cabinet and may be unknown to some Ikeans... my adjustment caused no issues - but if you really need that cabinet I'd double check with Torrus or another really informed source...

tommy, thank you for that description.
And don illustrated the reason I say take the article number of the 24" drawers and drawer fronts. They were just brought out this yr. And ANY drawer does well in the US.... The ikeans in Emeryville (the one close to SF) often have these same issues of "knowing too much" but not being as well informed as i'd hoped. I always ask (push, demand) that the article # is looked up. This gave me 24" drawers and also my Deep Half drawers (according to my fave ikean they only had shallow. she was at least very nice about her mistake)

Tom - congrats on getting your order done. It sounds like a very calm and smooth process. I hope that makes you feel that all that planning and climbing the learning curve was time well spent!

Glad you...

had an agreeable Ikea Elizabeth experience too. The key is getting there early -and preferably on a weekday. I'll be sure to avoid the bacon. Good luck with your install--I have a blog with my Ikea kitchen redo--should all be done late this week. Woohoo & good luck!

Thank you

And if only I hadn't been doing 50 things at once - perhaps I would've made the process easier on everyone. I do have my plans (the excel ones) and am going to try to post them via PDF... one of these days and start a blog... once everything arrives....

I guess I'll be calling back...

Just checking my order and researched on here what I could find on the drawer boxes - particularly those that fit the 12" cabinets - i.e. I think they are 9.1 inches deep front to back.. I needed these for the sink and the cooktop as both have items in them that don't allow full depth drawers. (Garbage Disposal and a downdraft vent).

I found this in another post:
The shallow (12") drawer boxes are also coming into the stores: 15x12" deep - art# 701.089.26, 15x12" shallow - art# 301.089.28, 18x12" deep - art# 501.089.27, 18x12" shallow - art# 101.089.29, 24x12" deep - art# 501.099.84, 24x12" shallow - art# 901.100.18.

And then I found these on my order:
301.089.28 - 2 of these ( I guess for the 30" cabinet (15 X 12" deep shallow drawer boxes)? And I found a 101.089.29 (I guess for the 36" cabinet (18" X 12" deep shallow boxes)?

I guess I expected to see the 15X12" Deep drawer and the 18X12" deep drawer - which have different article numbers since I'm using these on the lower drawers of the sink and cooktop.

Should I have expected to see these instead:
2 X 701.089.26 and
2 X 501.089.27

I think I understand that these would be the 12" deep (front to back) models in the Deep versions for the 15" and 18".

But the last two items are described as:
RATIONELL FL-EX DRWDMPR15X12"SLV NA

It worries me because usually these acronyms make a little sense to me... Like Rationell (ok - that I get)
FL-EX?
DRWDMPR (That looks like Drawer Damper?)
15 X 12" - ok - that seems like a 1/2 depth drawer
SLV (Silver? Shallow?)

That would be translated as Rationell Full-Extension Drawer Damper 15x12 Silver. Is that what you were expecting?

Not really - I was looking for the 9" deep drawers ... the ones we discussed for the sink mod - where I take the 30" Drawer Boxes and the 9" Drawer Boxes and mix and match to make 30" Drawer Boxes that are only 9" deep into the cabinet to allow for room for the Garbage Disposal.
