i just got back from my e palo alto ikea...it was my first true kitchen purchasing trip. i filled my element with an 88" oven cab, 2 80" fridge pantries with drawers, above fridge cab, plus enough stuff to make my avsikt 30" horizontal cabinet mod - for above the oven cab (with lighting!). i'm so close to ikea that's easier for me to break my trips into areas of the kitchen - probably 3 major ones.
anyway...there were only a couple of guys in front of me at kitchens and i overheard them talking about all these different styles and how much they'd need of this and that. i chatted them up to find out that these two guys are planning to outfit a 128 unit apartment complex with 3 different styles of ikea kitchens! they decided which styles to go with by what the ikean recommended as the most popular - adel birch, adel mb, and stat white. and they had heard that it was possible to put together a kitchen in a couple of hours - so they're planning to do 3 or 4 a day - yikes!!
i was starting to sweat it that i was going to be waiting all day but they nicely let me order my measly oven and fridge cabs and go on my way (they were only picking up 8 kitchen's worth today).
i wished them luck and told them to hustle it to the register and to pick up so the ikean (only one working back there today!) could start pulling their stuff. i'm sure they're still there...
i have to say that it was a pretty good experience for me in general - no issues really. they had my stuff pulled in 30 minutes and someone helped me load it. i had turned down help initially and had to sheepishly wander back in and ask ever so sweetly for assistance with that oven cab
oh, and no new lansa handles at e palo alto store yet - still waiting!
The quickest kitchen install I have ever done was one day (by myself) - a small 'L' shape...good luck to the guys with 128 of them - 'couple of hours' .

wow... 128 kitchens ..... all IKEA ... pretty sweet deal I'd say. If they have a bunch of helpers they can probably do it in a couple of hours ... they'll have it down to a science and a production line after only a few are installed ..
I'm sure the apts will have nice kitchens.... sounds like there's going to be a bit of a shortage of adel birch, adel mb and stat white in the bay area - if they start purchasing for all the apts - instead of staggering them out a bit.
128 kitchens - even apt sized kitchens is whole lot of cabinets!!!

yep, that's what i'm afraid of doreen! i'm using adel birch so i've got reason to worry a bit. the guys are trying to sell these units (in monterey) as quickly as possible so i assume they're trying to get everything together and started right away.
maybe it'll take them longer than they think...and in the meantime i can pick up the rest of my kitchen!
Yeah - I'd be worried too.... if I were you. I'd also be worried about the interiors, any cover panels and the birch cabinet boxes ... I'm one who gets nervous about that stuff.... I had to special order the interior drawers for my base drawer cabinets - as those were all out of stock when I ordered my kitchen. I got them about 2 weeks later.
I'd much rather know that I've got everything (or even extra sometimes) than to have my project come to a screeching halt because I can't get the parts I need.

They are optimistic people! Now, if everything is the same, and very small, and they aren't counting any finishing...perhaps. If they have Marvel's The Flash on their team...
Kelly - I was thinking Extreme home makeover style ... I watched that again for the first time in ages last night - I'm still in awe over how quickly the rebuild those homes from scratch - even knowing that that there were months and months of planning and work done prior to the demolition and rebuilding of the house.

I can't help but wonder where they read that you can put one together in a few hours! Maybe a few days...course, with a team of people you can get a lot done. If there's room for the people to work in. Wonder how big these kitchens are? Monterey is a pricey area, but I imagine apartments aren't gargantuan. I'd be interested in knowing how long it ends up taking.

Kelly - I loved the little red guy - and your silliness. I wouldn't bet that I'm right though ... would just hate to see devon's project get seriusly delayed because of those 128 IKEA kitchens in Monterey!
