I recently moved and forgot to remove the little barrel-like pieces the lower headboard connector bolts screw into. Needless to say, they didn't make it to the new house. I called the Houston Ikea (needed some other replacement hardware for the kitchen project) and they couldn't figure out what pieces I needed. Does anyone have a set of instructions for a Malm bed and could get me the part number off of that? Or miraculously have a couple of those little pieces laying around?

They're called cam bolts, aren't they?

Anna the CS Bot on ikea.com is supposed to be able to order missing pieces (or will be soon)

Yes, but I imagine you'll have to be able to communicate with Anna first. She is a maddening gal:

Here's what Anna had to say:

If you are missing anything from your purchase, all you need to do is return to your local IKEA store. Just go to the "Returns and Exchanges" desk with your original purchase receipt and a friendly co-worker will be happy to assist you.

The piece is not a cam. Some of the woodworking websites list it as a "cross-dowel". It is a cylinder with a threaded hole for the bolt drilled through the side. I tried buying some from a woodworking shop, but they are threaded differently and they did not havebolts the right length. $!@&*^!

Mike -- I'm embarrassed to say I have a slew of miscellaneous IKEA parts, but no idea what most of them are. Do you have any idea the size you need? I can post some pictures of what I have, and if you can pick out something that looks about right, I'd be happy to send them to you to try. Wanna give it a go?

Otherwise, you can trot on down to your IKEA and look for that friendly co-worker -- just try not to get the grumpy one .

The dowel is about 3/8" by 5/8". Take a look at the link in my previous post for a picture. The dowel seems to be a standard size with different size bolts that fit it, although the threads are apparently cut differently for the ikea versions. I would be thrilled if you happened to have a couple!

Mike -- how many do you need? Just 2? This is what you're looking for, right?

I've got several sizes: 1/2", 3/4", 7/16" and one lonely 5/8". Is it possible what you've got/need is 7/16"? Or, would that work for you? I can look through the other bags of stuff I've got, but these were the easiest access. If 7/16" will work for you, I won't go any further; if not, I can delve into the other bags. Let me know!

And PM me with your mailing address if you want what I've got!

I can't believe it! Thanks so much. I will do some measuring on the holes in the bed and see if I can get a better idea of what size it should be. From your picture, I kinda think it would be the larger one towards the bottom with the hole in the middle but I will double-check.

I'll PM you with my info.

Mike -- as far as I can tell (without digging further) I only have 1 of those large ones. That's the 3/4" size. Hole in the middle. The 7/16" one also has the hole in the middle. Again, only one of those. All the 1/2" and the 5/8" ones have the hole on the end opposite of the slot.

I'll see if I can do some more digging this afternoon. Chances are I'll have what you need.
