Vern Yip (orginally from Trading Spaces) has his own show now - Deserving Design - tonights' episode titled something like "special delivery" where he designed a nursery for two school teachers expecting their first child - he also re-did their kitchen - this 30 minute show always redoes two rooms - the homeowners suggest two - he tells them which one he'll do - and the other one is done as a surprise ...

so... the surprise room in this episode was the kitchen - he totally re-did the kitchen - keeping the appliances in the same place - but redoing cabinets, countertops, sink, faucet, all new appliances, a new island AND a new dining set. The cabinets are Adel birch w/ IKEA knobs, the double domsjo sink, I believe it was an IKEA faucet - couldn't tell what brand the appliances were ... laminate countertops (looked light grey) and a new dining table and chairs - the Norden table... tons of IKEA in the kitchen.

Check it out if you get a chance ... they did not mention that any of the products came from IKEA ... but they showed Vern shopping there - I didn't see a single IKEA sign or product name though ...

Doreen, Thanks for the heads up. Vern Yip is a trained architect and was always my favorite designer when I used to watch Trading Spaces.

His taste is impeccable and I was really impressed with the rooms he did for the family originally from New Orleans.

Erika - I agree ... Vern was my favorite designer on Trading Spaces too... he does wonderful things ... I always enjoy watching him - as you don't know what he's going to do - but everything he does is outstanding.

Madeline - thanks for posting an image of the kitchen! the design wall in the kitchen is paint - the nursery was a very nice looking space too! but It didn't use any IKEA products that I could see - he bought furniture that the wife had registered for for her baby shower.

Susan - I watch a lot of HGTV and the food network ...

I'm a professor of Interior Design with a Masters in Architecture, and I always ask my students who their favorite "TV Designers" are. Undoubtedly, Vern's name always tops the list and other familiar names top ANOTHER list as my students' LEAST favorite. In all cases, even an untrained eye can spot those individuals without proper training or education. It's one thing if a person with a degree in finance has fun decorating his or her own home or even their friends' home, but it's totally different when they start seeking out PAYING clients from the general public - or unsuspecting reality television show home owners.

I think shows like Trading Spaces should be required to reveal the qualifications of their "designers" before the unsuspecting home owners sign any contracts or allow them into their home!

Susan, we don't do TV either and when we visited my in-laws last spring they had to tear me away from HGTV. Probably a good thing I don't have that at home.
