High End Reno w/IKEA

Hi,

As I've been browsing through magazines this month I've seen Ikea everywhere. There've been various items and kitchens in several magazines, but the one that spoke to me today was in the fall edition of Renovation Style. An article called, Today, I Renovate, described a $300,000 plus whole house renovation that included an Ikea kitchen. Obviously, it was a choice, not a compromise. And of course, it looked fantastic. It sure validated the belief of lots of us here that an Ikea kitchen doesn't mean sacrificing design to save money.
Interestingly, the same issue had another kitchen where the stove was situated squarely in front of a window. Very cool!

Re: High End Reno w/IKEA

I find most of the based-in-reality objection to IKEA Kitchens is the fear that the kitchen line is similar to a majority of the furniture line...cheap, but you get what you pay for. It's so not true, and discerning and forward-thinking designers, architects and other professionals in the world of shelter often pick it for their own homes as well as those of their megabucks clients.

Re: High End Reno w/IKEA

Hi Melissa,

Thanks so much for posting about the IKEA-positive article in Renovation Style. Do you think you could scan a photo or two from that article? We don't have that magazine at the UW Bookstore nor the public library! Sounds like a trip to Borders...

P.S. That color you like in my kitchen is Benjamin Moore Bennington Gray. Funnily, you correctly saw it as a green--a greyish green. I thought it was a darker beige until two people pointed out its actual color to me. Need my eyes checked!

Erika,

I'd be happy to. It's great support material for those times when you have to deal with doubters!

Thanks for the color info. I'm going to check it out.

Re: High End Reno w/IKEA

Draperbound,

DH and I also did/are doing a whole-house remodel and have spent over 200K (so far) and we ONLY wanted an IKEA kitchen.

It was the gorgeous curved glass Frigidaire hood that I saw at IKEA that was the basis for my whole kitchen design.

climber_girl,

So nice see you in the threads again!

Does your flickr account include pics of the finished bathroom vanities you built out of horizontal kitchen wall cabs?

Re: High End Reno w/IKEA

Now, kelly, just calm down. It's really OK. Even if there are people who think otherwise....

Re: High End Reno w/IKEA

I think that person w/the stove in front of the windows owns stock in Windex.
Or maybe just likes modern art (I can just see the interesting pattern of splatters up there. tee hee hee). Maybe they are all fancy and have a downdraft vent.

Thanks for the reminder. I need to take pictures of the cabs and do a little splanin' w/the Flickr notes. DH is away this week so I'll try to get the pictures up tonight.
