Discuss Swedish imperialism? on IKEAFANS.com. We're Personalizing the IKEA Experience. Swedish imperialism? - Are you new to the IKEA concept? Want to find out what the excitement is all about? Do you have an IKEA Spotting to report? Read on!.
This morning on the telextservice of the NOS (public broadcaster in The Netherlands:
It translates roughly as: the Danes are mad at Ikea, because they name cheap flooring and doormats after Danish places. More expensive furniture has Swedish names. The Danes accuse Ikea of Swedish imperialism: "lower than a doormat is nearly impossible". Ikea denies intention.
Is there something wrong with me that I find this amusing?
I mean on the one hand, I can understand the Danish point of view, but on the other it seems a bit like reading too much in between lines that may not even exist?

OMG my son had an absolute fit when he heard that name! Almost as good as the FARTYG bathroom light...try explaining that to a few 10 year old boys with a straight face!
Mine are 10 and 12, and the Fartyg had them laughing all the way through the store and all the way home!
I'd bet that other languages enjoy such Ikea delights as well, no? Like a child's bed called Gutvik caused a bit of a sensation in Germany as being, well, as inappropriate as a young girl's bed called Lolita was in Britain!
