I'm very impressed with IKEA cabinets. But I realize that nobody in North America has had them installed for decades. I'd like to know what kind of reputation for durability they have in Europe.

Of course, I don't even know what IKEA cabinets were like 20 years ago, let alone 40. I imagine the product has changed over the years.

My grandparents had ikea cabinetry installed in their high end Orange County, CA, home in the early 90s (more than 10 years ago). They are currently unhappy with them and pooh-pooh'd the idea of me using ikea But when I pushed them on it, it sounds like they are more unhappy with the installation than with the cabinets themselves, and in all my visits there I never saw anything that made me think their cabinetry had any problems.

Thanks fisheggs. I remember when IKEA came to Orange County (my sister lives there). I just didn't realize it had been that long!

I installed an IKEA (System 210) kitchen in my house in 1986 - Kvadrat White was the door style (with glass corner cabinet doors!). The house was sold in 2004 - the people who bought it loved the kitchen. Todays hardware is far superior to that of 20 years ago - plus there are many more cabinet combinations available.
