I wrote a long post and accidentally deleted it! OH WELL.
To summarize:
My husband is a master cabinet and furniture builder. His stuff is great and beautiful and art. But for the price there is nothing to compare to Ikea! We use it all the time.
I have been in Real Estate for the past 10 years and interior decorating. We always dress our homes with Ikea. Mix it with authentic interesting pieces and everyone thinks everything is terribly expensive!
Plus, believe it or not there are still a ton of people out there that have never heard of Ikea. They don't have a store close to them and they don't know what it is. Shhhh. It's our little secret! I am actually terrible at keeping their secret I tell everyone about it!
As for resale. It is all about the look. Very and I mean very few people actually know what makes a good cabinet. Just because it is expensive doesn't mean that it is quality built. Ikea cabinets have many features and functions that you don't see in other manufacturers cabinets till you go up a great deal in price. And they are equal in design both in esthetics and function with any high end product.
So they are a great!!!!!!!!! value. They look good they function well and they are usually higher quality than MOST builders products (even in the high end homes!) 'nough said.
I've been a Realtor for 34 years, the last 20 in high end new contruction sales. Before I did my own IKEA kitchen, I spent many hours with other kitchen designers (as well as being in many model homes). I'm very satisfied that my IKEA kitchen will return 2 or 3 times the investment I have in it.
All I know is that when the assessor came through right after I'd installed my cabinets, she increased my market value by $13,000 while keeping the value of my neighbor's condo stable. I spent less than $1,500 on the kitchen - using a couple of lucky as-is finds (sink base and a whole pile of Lansa handles)
Nanci, Splendid kitchen at the price! What's the oven cabinet cover panel material? Stainless, to be magnetic?
Prospective buyers can have peculiar reasons for liking or disliking houses. A tile supplier warned me that some find "bath" tile in the kitchen inappropriate, even if the material is used regularly by designers and what constitutes bathiness is strictly subjective.
I've taken a substantial risk by buying a visibly dented stainless sink worthy of Tim Allen--which could result in instant no-go for a buyer wanting elegance, not something that should look at home on the patio next to the monster grill.
Hey Dave - the oven cover panel is Abstratk White - probably just looks shiny in the photo.
I have the same tile in a "carpet" pattern in my front entry, which you can see from the kitchen and I'm also doing a similar pattern (big tile, small tile, glass tile) in both bathrooms. I like a consistant look and think it's more pleasing to the eye instead of being "jarred" by a different look in every room. The same big tile flows from the kitchen floor thur the family room and onto the lanai so it really does feel like an expansive great room.
Re: How do ikea cabinets affect resale value?
I really pleased with the kitchen and don't think it can be beat for the $$. The only thing I found of poor quality, is the cabinet backs, but I got over it!
I visited a friend's house a couple of weeks ago. Uniform maple cabinets in kitchen and bath, same paint, uniform flooring around the house. Nothing faddish--simple steel doorknobs, simple cabinet knobs, etc. It made for a quiet house, focusing attention on the beautifully landscaped pool enclosure.
Yep, that's the look I like. All the hard surfaces and carpeting are khaki, white cabs and trim, and turquoise accent to some degree, in every room in the house.
