Re: Fab Finds in the AS-IS room

I think we've decided to stick with STAT white, it fits the house very well, and it's quite reasonable price wise. We're considering selling the house and moving somewhere with a much lower cost of living so we can do things like buy inexpensive houses and renovate them using mostly IKEA products . It'll give us a great source for generating really useful IKEA information, and hopefully we'll be able to rent the houses for a revenue stream that has nothing to do with the site. Not having all eggs in one basket and that kind of thing .

BUT we probably do need to finish the kitchen first... Have to say the integrated RENLIG is a nice dishwasher, looks great installed!

Coquitlam Kitchen Extravaganza (and I got my wooden plugs!!!)

Ikea Coquitlam is redoing kitchen displays (Ikean said new ones up next are Abstrakt Red, Nexus BB & large Stat). Arrived at the store to find a complete Adel Medium Brown completely-outfitted demo kitchen in the As-is. By the time I left, it was gone, along with the 12' marble countertop for $125 ---practically killed me to walk away from that one---and a complete Stat kitchen had taken its place. Several misc tall pantry units (with drawers!) and two stainless steel looking B4Ds (30 or 36", couldn't tell) deeply discounted, and half doz or more assembled cabinet boxes both white & birch. They're replacing all the appliances, too, so the as-is section is pretty sparkly right now.

The Coquitlam store must also be doing a spring cleaning (fall cleaning?), because they've had some really old stuff show up in as-is dept lately. e.g. Blue Linjar (sp?) doors and drawer fronts, and mixed in a bin of old style drawer dividers ($1/pkge---score!) were a bunch of small packages labeled " Rationell 18"" Hmm...a rod, bunch of screws, odd hardware, what looked like a drawer front, and TWO WOODEN PLUGS. After all the discussion here about the plastic plugs on pullouts, I sure knew what those were. I scooped up a coupla packs at $1 each, still not knowing what they were, but doing a little jig that I could now put wooden plugs in my pullouts.

Skip forward 10 days when I go to attach the doors to my pullouts. Very happy I have wooden plugs, yeah, BUT...it turns out Ikea didn't give me pullout hardware for my 15" pullout (I guess with the 12" it comes with the drawer pack...don't know what it was supposed to come with for the 15"). Critical missing parts were the little doodads that go over top of the screws in the door front so you can attach the rods. I'd *just* gotten back from Ikea two days ago, did not want to make the 1.5 hour trek again for two measly doodads, so I'm going through my Ikea hardware box hoping for divine intervention. Lo, in the mystery Rationell 18" bags were the exact pieces I needed. Strike the harps. Um...does having an "Ikea hardware box" make me hardcore?

Picked up some Rationell shelves ($2), Pantry door to use the edge as trim fill ($6), and a Ramsjo 15x15 door in perfect condition for $5.

I love As-is.

Um, yeah - that makes you hardcore. And if that doesn't, then buying doors that don't match your kitchen does.

Re: Fab Finds in the AS-IS room

Today I bought 2 Ingolf bar stools (counter height) from the Oportunidades (As-Is) room in the Málaga Ikea. They are pine-coloured and I want them to resemble oak to sort of match the Numerar oak worktop, so it will be sanding and varnishing this weekend!

Re: Fab Finds in the AS-IS room

I picked up a Nutid stainless and glass hood today in a (rather beat up) box for $165. Looks like a customer changed their mind...

Last year I picked up a Hjuvik faucet for $15. I didn't know what it was when I grabbed it but figured that any faucet for fifteen bucks is a good deal. When I got home and found out it was a $300 piece I could not believe my eyes. These have been my two biggest finds.

I also routinely pick up a pile of nuts and bolts whenever I am in the store - hex head metric thread bolts are perfect for my other hobby - bike repair :-)

I've been blogged!
Re: Fab Finds in the AS-IS room

I love the AS-IS room, especially the one they have at the Boucherville store (the Montreal store's is so small, it's sad).
I've purchased many, many items from this section, but the very worst I ever bought has to be that $800 black 3-seat leather sofa (can't remember its name, sorry).

It looked good, seemed like a great deal (it was 45% off or something) but its frame actually broke down the centre of the thing after barely 6 months of use. It just fell apart, and without an IKEA warranty to back it up, has been a really big waste of money.

I'll never buy large furniture again from the AS-IS section, but count me in for lamps, kitchen cabinets, shelving or tables anytime!
