Regarding the "dishwasher score" I scoredlast weekon a new dishwasher too. At a store that specializes in insurance claimmechandisethere was a Jenn-Aire stainless steel dishwasher marked $199. It looked brand new. I was going to take it, but their CC machine was not working. I returned the next dayto find it had acquired a sign stating "does not power up". Well, Duh! dishwashers do not come with a cord. They refused to sell it to me. I said, "I'll take it as-is for $100." They agreed. $40 for a U-Haul and it was home.
Contacted Maytag (makes Jenn-Aire). Found out that it was originally sold 3/06 (probably was a theft recovery) and was under 100% warranty that was transferable.I found the modelon the net for $780 to $860 and at Sears for $999. Talk about doing the happy dance!
I had decided I did not like black with SS fronts any more.Amonth ago I was brousing in the same store and founda never used Kitchen Aide slide in stove and over the stove microwave in white, retail value of both about $1,500, for $360 (+ U-Haul rental). I'll need to spend about $100 for the burner grates that were missing.I sold my 2 year old black/SS ones in the Penney Saverfor just under what I had paid for them. (I bought them as ding and dents also.) So now I'll have 3 new top of the line appliances with a retailvalue of over $2,300for less than $700.
A few years ago I bought a Maytag frig (on sale at Montgomery Wards for $990) at a ding and dent store for $300. I had to replace a hinge ($15). No one saw the dented side as it was to the wall.
Bottom line: if you have a freight damage store or insurance claim store in your area check them out for bargains too. You never know what you'll find. Also, don't be afraid to bargain with them. I do.
I think that we Ikea Fans are just natural bargain shoppers. Thats part of the fun.
wow, Shouva!! I've never heard of that kind of store. Where do you live? I wonder if there are any around here... Of course, I won't be needing any new appliances now for a while (gotta get these plugged in first)
InBakersfield, CA thestore is called "As Is". There also isa store in Fresno, CA. I think they are opening stores throughout the country . In the LA area there was a freight damage store in Monrovia (off the 210 freeway). I got a $450 Kenmore water softener for $125 there. Don't know if it's still there, but there are similar stores around.
In your area look inthe yellow pages under salvage, or freight salvage, or possibly insurance salvage. I've found on the Internet companies that sell full truck loads of salvage merchandise to people who then resell the stuff.Contacting these vendors may provide info for resellers in your area.
You can find all kinds of stuff at these places, not just appliances or large items. I frequent a store that sells damaged stuff that would normally go to grocery stores. I save 60% on canned goods, cereals, toothpaste, candy etc. Natrol vitaminssells at their warehouse in Chatsworth, CA short dated supplements for as low as $1.00/bottle . They have sales a couple times a year.
I guess bargain shopping is one of my hobbies. I refuse to pay retail unless I have to.
Thanks for info. I'll tell my in-laws who all live out there...
and I'll check for salvage around here. Right up DH's alley (he salvaged some corian countertops from a house being remodeled up in Maine... we'll see if he can work his miracles on it!)

DH definition
DH usually means Dear Husband (or, pick your own adjective starting with D).
We've been wanting one for a while and when we saw it in the AS-IS room on Saturday we knew it was to-be. Another person was latched onto it though. We left and when we got back to the as-is room, it was still there!

Yeah! I haven't found anything good of substance in AS-IS in a while. I'm feeling a bit of withdrawal. Maybe for a fix, I should go visit the stack of stuff from one of two "handyman" carts that followed Tigger home....
