Discuss cabs as entertainment center on IKEAFANS.com. We're Personalizing the IKEA Experience. cabs as entertainment center - PAX units, Billy bookcases, Ektorp sofas, Effektiv office furniture. Any and all IKEA, inside and out!.
A little off topic, but my wife wants a wall of cabinets (with an opening for the tv in the middle) in the living room. Ienvision a wardrobe on both sides, some bottom cabs, and then top cabs bridging the gap between the wardrobes. Anyone use Ikea for this? Any pictures? Thanks.
You might want to look into the PAX line, they are designed for clothing storage and have lots of interior fittings and many different door styles.
And I would suggest maybe a shelf or two as a bridge rather than cabinets. They won't be big enough to be useful storage for much and shelves will give you a nice place to display. Light them with the puck lights.
The Ikea store in Houston has exactly what you're talking about built out. Keep in mind, however, that you're talking about a 24" deep base cabinet; it's very possible for larger CRT TVs to be deeper than that. This is why most of of the IKEA wall unit systems, for example, have TV-specific units that are deeper than the rest of the system.
Of course, thin TVs are becoming much more common. Lots of table-top rear-projection sets are less than 20" deep, in addition to really flat plasmas and LCDs. And there are new, reasonably priced CRTs on the market and coming to market that are similarly thin.
I've thought about doing this, too, b/c I have an open plan and like the idea of all the cabinets matching. I think IKEA doesn't advertise using the kitchen cabs outside of the kitchen much since they make so many wall units, but I think it's a great idea.
I've seen pictures in some of the catalogs for higher-priced kitchen cabs that do show them used as entertainment centers. You might want to look for these and then adapt the ideas for ikea kitchen cabs. If your tv is the right size, you can put it inside one of the wall oven cabinets for a built-in look and then flank it with the tall pantry cabinets (which come in 2 depths), glass wall cabs stacked on top of each other and/or the open perfetk shelves.
1. Welcome! Glad you joined us, and good to see you posting
2. Off topic? Nah! You're talking IKEA stuff, right?
3. Don't have any pictures of that specific thing, but we'd love to post yours when you get done!

I think it is a great idea and we've thought of doing something similar, but are tackling the kitchen problem first.
I'm putting in a picture I took at the Houston store of kitchen cabs used with a TV. This probably isn't the picture that BayouModern is talking about, but this shows use with a flat panel TV. Sorry for the horrible quality-- a photographer I am not! This looks very "kitchenish" to me, but I think with tall cabs and maybe more doors at the bottom, it could work really well.
