As I'm living in a small studio apartment, I thought of getting the Grankulla futon as a bed to save space:

IKEA | Sofas & Sessel | Bettsofas | GRANKULLA/ MUNKARP | Futonsofa (Swiss site)

Now I've been told the futon is terribly uncomfortable to use as a bed every night and should only be used as a sofa or occasional guest bed.

Is this also the case if I take the thick 7" Munkarp mattress?

While I'm not familar with the Ikea futon mattresses, I do know the issue with sleeping on them long term is how some of them have mattresses that are designed moreso for seating with stiffer springs, rather than being softer and in greater quantity that is preferable for sleeping. That is most likely where most of the comments are based off of.

If the futon mattress is constructed like a regular one (which I know some of Ikea's are), then you ought to be just fine.

I just had a friend stay at my place and use the MUNKARP mattress. It's fine for a couple of nights. However, after sleeping on it for a couple of days, the mattress thinned out, and I don't know that I'd want to sleep on it every night.
