I just finished installing two Effektiv wall units, and wanted to share my experience for the benefit of anyone else who is daunted at the thought of trying this.
When I purchased the Effektiv units, I didn't really think through how I would mount them on the wall, and the instructions don't really help in this regard. I read through some messages on the forums here, and found out about the Akurum rail that is used for mounting kitchen wall units. I spoke with the staff at my local store in Portland, OR, and between us we managed to come up with a solution.
This is the standard Effektiv wall unit:
The Akurum rail is about 7/16 deep, so I had to add a piece of wood to the bottom of the cabinet at the back so that the top and bottom will be level. I found some nice craft pine at Home Depot which did the trick:
Now for the mounting of the Akurum rail. I was lucky enough to find a stud exactly where I wanted it on the left side of the unit:
The two cabinets together covered five studs, so the rail was very securely mounted using five No.10 x 3 inch woodscrews:
Now came the tricky part. The Effektiv units are designed to be mounted directly to the wall, so they do not come with the pieces required to mount them to the Akurum rail. A quick visit to the nice people in customer services, and I had the pieces that I needed:
I forgot to include the nut in this picture, but all three parts are available in the spare parts bins that you normally find in the customer service area.
Next step was sliding the bolt assembly into the rail and spacing them out to align with the holes in the Effektiv units. That made the last part really easy - lifting the cabinets into place and securing them with the bolts:
Note the wood at the base of the cabinet that keeps the cabinet level when mounted on the rail.
The finished effect looks like this:
