I have never used a loft bed before but am planning to buy this one because I'll be moving to cut down on costs (... from having two whole rooms to myself in a three-story house to one tiny tiny room in a single-floor apartment -- but that's another story).Â* Four quick questions: 1) The website specifies using a mattress no thicker than 8 5/8" with this. Would a thinner mattress be even more comfortable?Â* Would a slightly thicker one still be okay?Â* Â*2) Could this loft bed support two bodies (*only on occasion*, when my bf visits me) -- for a combined weight of appr. 300 lbs.?Â* 3) Does this creak / shake when the sleeper turns at night?Â* 4) With a fine mattress, is it just as comfortable as any other bed?Â*Â*Thank you!

Hi! And welcome!

My son has the Tromso twin size bed, so I can give you answers based on that.

The reason they say you need to use no more than a certain thickness mattress is because the rails on the side are only about a foot high, and too high of a mattress would not leave enough rail exposed around the sides for safety. Another reason, not as critical but certainly worth considering, is because the bed is very high...there's only about 2 or 2.5 feet to a standard 8 foot ceiling. A few inches could mean the difference between bumping your head or not every morning.

They do creak, and I found I had to tighten the bolts periodically. My DS is not a very active sleeper, but the going up and down the ladder shook it loose I think. Will your neighbors know you're entertaining up there? Possibly. But keep that hex key handy and you won't have to worry much.

I imagine it will support the two of you...depending, of course, on how athletic you might be together. There isn't a lot of headroom, just FYI . But the construction is sound and the pertinent parts are heavy duty steel, so it's structurally able to hold that weight.

It is just as comfortable as any other type of bed that is on a platform or a boxspring.

Thanks again, evaperconti, for answering my questions and addressing my concerns so precisely.Â* I'll be sure to keep things mellow and horizontal up there. Â* And thanks for the reminder about limited headroom... I've been looking forward to sleeping at such a height (reminiscent of my top-bunk days in freshman year of college) but will keep the mattress thin to avoid starting every morning with a literal headache.Â* Maybe I should just get a futon mattress....

We just bought one in a double size for our 13 year old DS , who weighs 150 lbs. It was creaky the first few nights, but it has gotten quieter.

We have low ceilings, so we cut a foot off each leg with a plumbers pipecutter. It still gives him room for a chair and small computer desk underneath, and room at the top for sleeping.

We have a standard size/thick mattress on it, works just fine!

It's been a few months since I began this thread, and I'd like to report back that the bed has worked out very well for me. I've been visiting my bf at his place, so have yet to test the bed's weight- and/or activity-tolerance.

One question, though: how often should I re-tighten the bolts? I don't mind the creaking much, but I'd like to be assured of safety. (The bed is surrounded by stuff now so it'd take some work for me to even get to all the bolts.) Any chance it'd fall apart somewhere if I neglect re-tightening?

I did it about once every four months or so on my son's twin size.

Re: Four questions about the Tromso Loft Bed (full/double size)

Put LockTite on the threads, and you won't have to retighten all of the time. Stay away from the red, unless it is to be a permanent monument (you'll never get the bolts out).

Re: Four questions about the Tromso Loft Bed (full/double size)

I have just purchased the Tromso twin over full bed. I have not open the box yet but have looked at the instructions I have found here on the site. The instructions here show the ladder on the left side of the bed. When I looked on the website the ladder is on the right hand side of the frame. Some of the other Tromso beds state that the ladder can be mounted on either side. However the description on this particular twin over full model does not state that. 2 questions.

1. Can the ladder be mounted on the right side?
2, Does that basically make the instructions that I downloaded here invalid since the assembly would now be different?

Thank you...

Re: Four questions about the Tromso Loft Bed (full/double size)

HELP! please. i have a tromso and its really squeaky. i've tightened all the bolts - to no avail. if i slide the legs around a little it helps, but as soon as it shifts it gets squeaky again. will WD40 work? or some sort of graphite powder?

Question Re: Four questions about the Tromso Loft Bed (full/double size)

I have all the parts for full-bottom/twin top Tromso...got on CL, but the sellers could not locate their bag of nuts and screws and ohmy...they are in the middle of moving, and think they threw the bag in one of the moving boxes, and are trying to find it. I am new here at site, did research...on replacing all these little things: I don't have a receipt, so it looks like I can't go in to store and get replacement screws etc? Or could I go in with directions and find the parts on own? Or, nightmare of all nightmares..I have to go to Home Depot or somewhere and figure out the sizes? Any less complicated input from the experienced Ikeans out there?
