What would the chances be that you could use a 36'' x 18"x 24'' deep refrigerator cabinet as a floating vanity? I want to mount it about 12'' off the floor and put a vessell sink on top. I have 3 feet of width on each side wall so the depth is a non- issue. Has anyone ever considered/done this? Thanks!

I would think that would be fine...no reason I can think that it wouldn't work. You might want to reinforce the sides/back of the cabinet in order to provide additional support for your sink, but that's up to you.

climbergrrl -- weren't you planning on doing something similar?

One thing to consider would be to be sure that you caulk the inside of your box well, in case of any leaks.I heard someone say (can't remember who, or where, for that matter) that the sink bases are made of a less water damage prone material, but I can't find any evidence of that. We caulked all the joints on ours so that if there's ever a leak...well, hopefully there won't be, because we also have a cork floor! Ack!

The sink base supports are made of MDF, Susan. That's the only difference between a 24" "SB" cab and a regular ole 24" base cab. I saw it with my own eyes!

Of course, that really doesn't matter here...I think I saw a floating fridge cab as vanity on Apartment Therapy. Looked awesome at a fraction of the price of the Kohler Purist (? I think that's it!) line.

Ikea has a new vessel sink too, btw.

Thats the look I am after-Kohler Purist-but at 1/5th the price!

Also, as an aside, I read on this forum about the back order of Abstrakt Red which I will use in my kitchen so I called IkeaCanada (by mistake) and they said that was not an issue for them. I was amazed you can call them and get a real life Kitchen person on the phone. In the US it's "fax Woodbridge and tell them a good time to call you and they will get back to you in a few days"....

You shouldn't have to fax it at all... I still have trouble coming to grips with how NON-internet aware IKEA is. ::shrug::

I would DEFINITELY reinforce the support if you're going to use it as a vanity. The regular sink cabs sit on the floor and the compression strength of the MDF is MUCH higher than the sheering strength if that makes any sense? The wallcabinet mounting system is not designed with sink + water + person sitting on it kind of load in mind. I know people *shouldn't* sit on it, but you have to plan for someone doing so...

Not sure how best to go about it, Angle braces top and bottom?Maybe 2X4 triangles on the insides of the walls of the cabinet? And one in the middle? It'd depend on stud location in the walls... I'd want to figure out a good way to transfer loadat the front edge of thevanity to the wallso you're not asking the MDF to support the weight.We don't have one of the over refridgerator cabinets ourselves, so I'mbasing my comments mostly on standard wall cabinets.

I forgot to mention above that I really like the idea... It would be anice effect. I just thought there should be a voice of caution raised regarding the possible danger of having it rip off the wall or break. Definitely a situation where it's better to overengineer the support than to have someone *perch* on the edge of your lovely vanity and have all your work, and the unfortunate person, come crashing down... It *might* very well be ok without extra support... But why take the risk?

Yes! That's exactly what we are doing - and to get the Purist Suite look. We also got a shallow 15" pantry for the real storage at the end of the granite countertop (against the wall) bridging the two cabs.

We still have the cabs in boxes because I'm paranoid and bought things before the July 1st FY switchover(We don't even have a bid from the contractor, but we're DIYing 90% of this 1500 sq ft remodel!), but the Ikean who sold me the boxes suggested 2 hanging rails instead of one. Other than that little gem, we haven't even thought about how we are going to mount them.

I can't remember who suggested additional coats of polyurethane (?), but I'm definitely going to do that, too. And believe it or not, my DH wants to get additional 8' panels to use as facing on our super deep soaking tub box. With potential bath splashing that will definitely need extra protection - especially since we went with Nexus Birch.

The caulking also sound like an excellent idea!

Lisa, I didn't know about the vessel. Is it in the new 2006 catalog? If so, what page?
