I want to make a bench

I'd like to build a bench for my entryway. Something to sit on when changing shoes, preferably with a storage. Furniture stores only carry "traditional" style, I am all for modern. I thought about using a bookcase, tv stand or similar for this purpose. Which ones do you think are good candidates in terms of size and load carrying capacity?

Re: I want to make a bench

I took an Effektiv low cabinet and doors in brown-black and put on the Besta hollow-looking legs, along with some pulls, and made a shoe bench. Dunno if it will bear any significant weight, but at least my shoes are out of the way! The Effektiv base would have probably been a better choice if I were to sit on it every day.

I also just put in the norrebo storage bench and it's a favorite around here.

Re: I want to make a bench

We made a bench out of a 36" fan/fridge cab, converting the doors to pullout drawers by using the partition meant for the 4 drawer 30 or 36" cabinets. We put a leftover piece of Pronomen on top and used the leg bases but not the legs themselves. Even though we only have room for the 12" deep cab and 9" drawers, it's very helpful in managing our daughter's shoes.

That said, if we had room for the Norrebo we would have just used that.

Re: I want to make a bench

Thanks a lot for the tips!
The entryway I'm thinking about is shared with a laundry room, which I remodeled using remains from Linjar Blue. I don't think Norrebo will look good with it. It is also too long. On IKEA site I found Effectiv wall cabinet. Catlike, is it what you had in mind? It seems to fragile for seating.
I thought about kitchen cabinets, but 12" seem to shallow and 24"- too deep.

Re: I want to make a bench

The 12" cab works OK for us with a somewhat deeper chunk (about 15" if I remember correctly) of butcherblock fitted out as a seat. Attach to the wall with a 2x4 and let the extra top hang mostly over the back edge.

Re: I want to make a bench

I was thinking about building bench for my living room window seat.

What I'm planning is to buy BESTA parts to make my own custom one (black-brown for the color). This will be 15'' deep x 47'' long bench (height will be 16'' + caster height).

The BESTA shelf listed below usually has 2 drawers, and 2 shallow open shelf above them. But I would rather cover whole front, so the clutter in the shelf doesn't show up. To do so, I will buy VARA door below as drawer front, and attach them same way IKEA instruct to drower front. So when you open the drawer, you can still use the shallow shelf area, but whatever inside won't show as long as the drawer is closed.

I believe this will end of with the total cost of $150 + door knob price.

-1 of Besta Shelf 47x16x15
-2 of INREDA Drawer w /o front 24x16x2
-2 of Besta VARA Door 23x15
-Any door know & 3 package of Caster

Re: I want to make a bench

We went to IKEA, armed with the suggestions, but ended up with a cowardly, non- DIY purchase- Klippan footstool with a blue cover
IKEA | Fabric sofas & armchairs | Footstools & pouffes | KLIPPAN | Footstool

Thanks to everyone!
