In the "As-Is" room at Burbank this past Thursday they had 3 Nian lights/shelves on clearance for $27. I thought "Wow! Gotta check them out. I plugged eachone in and was absolutley horrified by the light color and clarity. It looked like a light shining through a darkalgea filled aquariun! Awful was an understatement. I asked if these were returns (as in due to bad bulbs or something). He said, "No, they were displays."
If this is what these lights give off I hope to goodness they are discontinued. There is no way they could even illuminate a counter top. The only good I could see from them is to give an eerie effect at your front door at Halloween. Placing the bowl of candy on this shelf with some fake webbing would look goulish indeed.
I thought they were a great idea until I saw them in person. The light was positively *yellow*. Bleech. So we're looking at different lighting schemes now.
Is it possible it was an effect of the fluorescents in the store? Someone here has them installed and in the pictures, they looked great. I can't remember who at the moment...I'm chalking it up to not enough caffiene. :?

The ones I saw in the As-Is room were definitely not being affected by the store's lighting. This would have been a subtle color shift at the most. I talking algea filled aquarium. Shar made an understatement when she wrote "bleech". If only one had given off this color I would have bought the others two, but all three were the same.
Maybe most are good... at the beginning. I am more than just a little bit put off by the fact that 3 that were used in the store as displays were all bad. This to me says that they have a high percentage of bad ones, or that the bulb deteriorates quite rapidly.
If anyone wants to unload unloved Nians, I am looking for a few. I will retrofit them for some more positive light, or live with them. I missed out on all of them on sale at my local Ikea, and they may not be coming back I guess, since they were a bit unpopular. I think the main problem was the price.
The main problem was the price AND the horrid color! I'm talking eerie special effects, creature from the black lagoon, light shining through swamp water, type color (OK, maybe not that bad. I can tend to be a bit dramatic).
Yuck! Yuck ! and Yuck (there were 3 lights I tested.) Of course I did not consider that the bulbs could be changed out. Duh! If a $5.00 bulb from Home Depot can fix the problem then they would be a good buy at $20 or so.
Actually, the light is not only a result of the lamp, but also the color of the glass. If you were to change out all the glass, you would spend a bundle of money. You would need to change not only the glass top and bottom of the shelves, but also the door, which as you can imagine would be troublesome for an asvikt door. IE, not possible.
I have no trouble with the color of the whole thing, it fits into our kitchen just fine. It makes a nice dim nightlight, and the cabinet still looks sharp lit up.
At $20, it is a fair price, in my opinion. At the original price, I would never have even considered it.
