Sawing a Vika Amon

I want to combine a Vika Amon with an Expedit Desk to create a loong workdesk with shelves to one side.

Unfortunately, the Amon is about five inches too long fit along my wall.

I'm considering just using my Ryobi jigsaw to saw off the end of the Vika. Will that work? I don't really know what's inside of it or if it's designed to be cut. It's ok if the sawed end looks odd, since it'll be against a wall.

Thoughts? Advice?

thanks!

Re: Sawing a Vika Amon

Hello Tim, welcome to IKEAfans!

So... The VIKA AMON is composed of a paper honeycomb interior, with a laminate shell (essentially cardboard inside, 'formica' outside)

At the very least, you'd need to use a blade rated for Formica/laminates on your jigsaw, and blue-tape along the cut lines to reduce the amt. of chipping.

You could glue on a piece of lumber to cover the cut edge - even if it's against the wall, it'd still be "open to the elements". Just a skinny piece of lath would probably do it. Maybe just gluing on a piece of sturdy cardboard, and then sealing that?

I'd suggest making several practice cuts inside the waste area before you try to cut on your length line (i.e.: if you need to cut off 5", then practice cutting off 2" then 3" first)

You'd also need a long enough straight edge to go across as a guide (clamped down so it doesn't shift). You might also try pre-scoring the laminate along the cut-line with a utility knife first - but I don't really know (just making an educated guess)

Anyway - it's a paper interior and a thin brittle shell.

Re: Sawing a Vika Amon

I would also recommend buying/borrowing/renting a circular saw (and appropriate blade) instead of trying to use your jigsaw. The up & down motion of the jigsaw will create vibration and shifting when cutting thru the hollow area, which is most of the table top. A jigsaw is just not made for cutting long straight lines. You'll never regret having the higher speed and greater control of the circular saw.

Just my thoughts; worth no more than I charge for them...

Bon chance!
