I read an article suggesting I not buy Billy bookcases and one of the reasons sited was that they only come with a single shelf. Is that still true?
I was shopping online and in-person and was looking to get the black (not black-brown) frame in 31" width, but couldn't find extra shelves in black. Seriously. You can buy the frame but not shelves. Am I ... blind?
the bookcases come with shelves, number of shelves depends on height of the bookcase. the taller ones have something like 5 shelves; the CD tower has 7?; the short one has 2.

OK, black-brown, not black. However, the website doesn't always accurately represent what's available in the store. I'm not sure, but they night have separate *black* shelves at the store. You might call to see.
If it's a serious issue, spray painting a plain pine board with black spray paint will probably work fine; especially if there are objects on the shelves.
Ikea does not stock extra shelves, height extensions, etc. for the painted Billy units other than white. The wood veneers seem to stay fairly consistent from year to year, whereas the painted finishes (other than white) change regularly. It's worth checking the as-is dept. for spare pieces.
