Flooring choice for 1/2 bath off kitchen?

Hi all!

Things are looking very good for my newest plans. We want to put a 1/2 bath off the kitchen. It's actually kinda IN the kitchen, but...more to the side...it's hard to explain, please check my plans here.

I have the whole bathroom planned out already, and what I really, REALLY want is a black and white checkerboard floor. The kitchen floor will be hardwood...not my first choice for a kitchen, but it's my DH's one deep desire in the room, and since he is caving in on everything else, I am caving in on this! I'll make the contractor put down seventeen coats of poly, I'll be fine.

In the bathroom....I don't want to do tile: too much upkeep, and too cold for an unheated space. I re-FUSE to do hardwood floors in the bathroom: seen it, smelled it, not worth the trouble. (If you have hardwood in your bath and love it, I am in awe and bow to you! I've seen it get horribly dirty, and it just won't work for me.)

So, for me, that leaves a few options: Marmoleum? Vinyl flooring? Vinyl tile? What am I missing?

I'd love some input from folks, and to hear about experiences. I'm trying to keep costs down in this room, but I want to do something that's going to be practical and will last. The space is 4 feet wide by 6 feet long, so it won't take much material no matter what!

Thanks,
Emmie

I'm thinking marmoleum for the powder room off our kitchen. I understand it comes in tiles you can install yourself, or as a sheet that you would want a contractor to put down for you. The tiles are pretty big, though - I think maybe too big to get much of a checkerboard going in 4x6 feet - and I'm not aware of the sheet being available in patterns.

Vinyl composite tile? I don't know if that comes in smaller squares. It's very tough - I think often used commercially - but it was the old floor in our kitchen, so sometimes used in residential.

Interested in what you decide! I won't be ready to do ours for a couple months at least.

I've been looking at Marmoleum for a bathroom about the same size, and I think it would be a nice choice. You can probably find remnants or roll-ends for $2-3 per square foot at discount flooring places. It's 6'7" wide, so it would be a good fit for your room. The salesman I talked to encouraged me to use the sheet rather than the click in a bathroom, because then you don't have to worry about water getting in the cracks. But I've got click laminate in our main bath, and it withstands water just fine so I'm not sure that should be a big worry. The Marmoleum click comes in 1-foot squares, so you could do your checkerboard thing.

You could use the really thin vinyl tile (VCT?) if your floor is smooth and you don't mind waxing it now and then. It will crack over time if it runs over the slightest ridge - at least that was my experience.

I love the black and white check look, but you might want to lay out paper checks before committing - it sounds like a small room for such a big pattern. You can order borders or even inlay shapes of different colors if you use the sheet Marmoleum. That could be a compromise if you find you want pattern on just part of the floor.

There is a ceramic tile product that looks like wood...I don't remember what the product manufacturer is, but it comes in larger "planks" which would minimize grout lines. You would also use a fairly dark grout, so that would minimize upkeep. Won't help the coldness factor, but would give you a consistent look. Since it's such a small space, and there is no other heating source, have you considered underfloor heating? It would solve several problems for you!

Here is a link to the discussion about the hardwood looking porcelain tile.

I just went to Ikea today and found they now carry linoleum click tile in 3 colors (mottled black, mottled beige, and plain gray). I think the beige and black would look great, and they're 2.99 per foot (in Seattle, at least) - less than the Marmoleum version.

I have a half bath that's off my kitchen and was wondering the same. Thing is though we're putting tiles in the kitchen because we've had two floods in the past (one earlier this fall), and our Pergo looked pregnant from all the moisture!lol

Hadn't thought to check out IKEA...Marmoleum is not available in my area, and DH won't bother with long distance ordering and planning anyway.
