Hi all I've enjoyed lurking here the last two weeks, I'm soon to be installing my Ikea kitchen, but meanwhile I need to come up with an interestingroom divider to give my studioapartment a bedroom...

I'd LIKE to build a freestanding square partition (as opposed to folding screens)...but I'm not coming up with any good ideas for HOW to do it...

I figure I could use plywood and cover it with something...but I dunno what or how to do the legs..

Any ideas?

Welcome to the forums!

Have you looked at Capita or Numerar Stainless legs? Are you wanting to have your partition serve as additional storage, or can you not spare the square footage? What style are you going for? Modern? Traditional? Do you have a floorplan that we could look at? Lots of questions!

Sounds like a fun project....if you can give us some more information, I'm sure between the design departments and the engineering departments, you'll have it all figured out in no time. What kind of kitchen (i.e. door style) are you installing?

Oooh, IKEA has a fun storage/room divider thingy. Goes into the ceiling with metal tubing - looks like a fat CAPITA.

Does anyone have their catalog handy? It's very, very cool - in fact, I've thought about buying it for my master suite.

Then again, you can always build something.

OTOH, it might be somewhat *wide* for a studio.

Lisa -- are you talking about STOLMEN?

Looks really cool. With a curtain behind it for privacy, it could work if you're going for a cool mod look. Those curtains on a rail could work for the privacy part. What were those called? The ones I returned, but you wanted. You remember? :?

You could also use one of those big square EXPEDIT bookcases. They have clear/colored lucite boxes that fit perfectly into the squares so you could have a checkerboard effect but still let light through.

Another option would be one of the ceiling mounted curtain systems, either a wire that you hang curtains from or the track system used for the less-flexible panel system they have.

Okay, it looks like that, Susan, but it's wood. Has a bit of a 70's feel. Maybe it's the expedit - there are also storage boxes that match the line (and in the catalog, they show the storage like a bench lining the walls).

EDIT to add: Kvadrant. Those would be a great and simple room divider.

Lisa, I think you mean the NORREBO system? All midtone wood, very Swedish/70s style.

Norrebo:

Yes, Lisa....KVADRANT. (Sounds like an expletive.) In the catalog, they show EXPEDIT with KVADRANT. Nice look.

Which door style are you using for your kitchen? Some of the door styles are also used for the PAX wardrobe system, which has a fairly big sliding door as one of its options. There might be a way use only the door and mount it on legs?(garden/lisa/tigratus??) It comes in birch and oak, too.

But, ditto to all above about thinking of adding storage if you have enough space for it.

I really like the hanging glass door ideas. In the movie "High Fidelity" there is a wonderful room with hanging antique glass windows as a room divider.
