I was planning to buy the Docent TV cabinet here but I noticed the max load capacity is 154 lb. My 32" Sony WEGA TV is 176.5 lb.

How strict is the max load capacity defined by IKEA? Will adding 20 lbs to it be dangerous?

Anyone else run into this?

Hi gompol! Welcome to the forums!

I don't know for sure about the weight limits, but you can reinforce just about anything by installing a horizontal "apron" underneath the supporting shelf. You'd use a 1x3 or similar turned on its side, and attached underneath the shelf. Front and back would be advisable. You could install it right behind the drawer fronts and nearing the back of the unit - in front or behind the drawers depending on clearance.

Perhaps one of our seasoned installers will come along and offer some advice as well, but that's what I came up with.

Because of the way Docent is constructed, there's not much "danger" (from a safety standpoint) in overloading it. But the top could sag under the weight of the TV, and inhibit the proper function of the drawers underneath (the tops of the drawers could rub on the underside of the top piece).
