Stacking Expedit bookcases

So, I wanna make a really big bookcase, and I thought of stacking 4 149x149 cm Expedit bookcases together to make a 298x298 monster. Will this work? Will it hold or will it crumble under the weight of the cases and the books?

Man... You must have some monster ceiling height!

I'd certainly listen to anyone with an experiential basis for their opinion (Chuck?) much more than myself, but I would *tend* to think that it would probably be ok. The EXPEDIT and BONDE systems have quite a few vertical supports to help carry the load, though I think the BONDE would be stronger overall as every vertical support goes top to bottom while I think the EXPEDIT uses some shelves with vertical seperators?

In any case, I'd certainly hedge my bets by attaching it to multiple studs where possible, that's a LOT of weight/height you're talking about. Have you considered the possibility of supporting some of the weight with cables from above? If you can get solid mounting points in some rafters, you could run cables down and through bolt them to the structrural uprights of the top unit to help support the weight. Add some turnbuckles so you can finetune/adjust how much tension you have and I'd think you'd be all set. Could do some neat things with the cables too. Put lighting on them... You name it!

Man... You must have some monster ceiling height!

149 CM? I was thinking about one of the taller units, that's about 5 feet for those of us on this side of the pond. I'd think that 300 CM (10ish ft) wouldn't be undoable at all... We've got an 86"(218 cm) BONDE unit (two side by side) in our daughter's room and as it's obviously designed for that size it's no issue at all. Particle board is really quite strong in compression, I'd probably be largely concerned that the units are mounted securely to the wall to prevent tipping...

The height is no problem, I've got plenty of it. The wall is about 3.30 m (10'9") high. More of a problem is the width, I'm measuring it now and it is about 2.93, so I'm 6 cms short. Would it be possible to leave out one post in the middle, and simply attach the shelves from one bookcase to the outer post of the other? (I hope this is clear)
