Hi all,

I have just purchased the Markus Swivel Chair and have the following 2 questions:

1. There is a bottom egg-shaped knob at the bottom of the chair. May I know what exactly does turning it left/right do? Also, will overturning to clockwise/anti-clockwise damage it? The manual does not illustrate its function very clearly and upon testing, I felt found no tangible difference.

2. Whenever I lean the chair backwards (when its tilt locked), I get a metal sound rocking/clunking at the base. How do i eliminate the sound?

I just purchase it a few days ago, so I do not think its wear & tear. All nuts & bolts are tightened properly

Hello hotdog, my name is Kevin and I work in Workspaces for IKEA Woodbridge .

The knob on the bottom of the chair (egg shaped) is the tilt tension knob. If you turn this knob to the left or right it increases or decreases the amount of force you need to apply to the back of the chair to go back in it. More tension and you have to push harder to lean back.

The metal grinding sound is not normal behavior. I am sitting in my Markus right now and I don't seem to have that issue. If it's a real problem, disassemble the chair and take it back to your local IKEA along with the receipt and have them swap it out for another one. That's very unusual for Markus to have a defect, they are one of our best chairs.

I have exactly the same issue (no 2) on a black leather markus chair.
When the seat back is locked any movement you make in the chair causes a metal on metal clunking noise.
It comes from within the main tilt body under the seat cushion.

However, I went back to my local ikea and tried a few others. They all did it to a certain degree, but probably not as bad as mine. It may be a coincidence but I tried an oracnge cloth one that was not making the noise, and a blue one that was barely noticable, but all the black ones seemed to be the same, although I still think not as bad as mine.

It is as if the mechanism needs some form of padding within it to stop the metal on metal contact on the backrest/locking mechanism.

How do I go about getting one of the design team to properly look into this, rather than just the sales people? I tried contacting Ikea drect but they just said to return it for a replacement. But that seems a little pointless if they are all the same. I really need to know if it is a 'feature' or a fault, and whether it is coincidence the cloth ones seemed to be better.

Talk to your local ASIS department, and ask them to put in a quality alarm for it. Its how stores bring possible item defects and improvements to IKEA of Sweden's attention
