Dulcinea's spot on...ikea.com not so much
DulcineaK, you're exactly correct about the website. It's really not a useful indicator of what's actually on the shelf in the store.
Here's what happened: after checking stock on the website, and getting almost no hits for the items I wanted at the nearest store, I checked the site for the next nearest store. I got more hits for that one so I decided to take my chances and do the drive, thinking that if needed, I could try the first store on the way home for anything still on the list.
Turns out I got everything I wanted at the second closest store, including items that were out of stock and marked unavailable on the site. Hooray!!
Interestingly, even an Ikean told me the best thing to do is to call the store to check on the items you want...a disturbing suggestion in 2007. It's strange that they work so hard in other areas of guest experiece, but don't allocate the resources to have an accurate site. Seems like the additional revenue would more than pay for the additional staff.
Thanks IkeaFans! Without the information here, I would have believed the site and missed out on getting a cool, cost-effective solution for my room.
