Alright. For those of you with Billy bookshelves (Eva?), if I remember correctly from the store, the shelves have exposed fasteners at the top and bottom. What have you brilliant people done, if anything, to cover the fasteners? Or do you just leave them exposed?

Thanks.

I used those little plastic plugs you get with knockdown furniture to cover the metal lock. They snap into the cross, sometimes with the gentle coaxing of a hammer. The lightest ones (maple?) match just fine. Yes, you can see them, but they aren't nearly as noticeable as the silver lock is!

Not sure what exposed fasteners you're thinking about? I have a pair of BILLY bookcases sitting behind me holding my computer books, and the shelves are supported by pegs that fit into notches on the bottom of the selves much as the kitchen cabinet shelves are supported. They're very unobtrusive. The only exposed fasteners I can think of are the safety braces that you can use to attach them to the wall at the top of the bookcase, and they're quite hidden unless you happen to be 8' tall?

Oh... looking at the side of the bookcase? I thought you were talking about the moveable shelves. The 2 at the top 2 at the bottom and 2 in the middle? Ok. As eva said, you can get the little snap in covers, or just mount something on the exposed end of the bookcase, we have a magazine holder on ours. You could also make a virtue of neccesity and add some contrasting color wood plugs if you like the Arts & Crafts sort of look...Or some other decorative trim? Hang pictures over the fasteners? Depends a lot on what other elements are in the room, and what kind of style you prefer.

Thanks. Eva, where did you get the covers? Rockler or Lee Valley or am I just making this too hard?

You can get them at any hardware store, Home Depot, Ace, etc. I actually used some leftover ones from some knockdown furniture I got a while ago. I have a whole drawer full of leftover pieces and parts, and sometimes they come in handy!

If they don't quite fit you can just put a blob of hotglue on the back of them. You could probably do the same thing with a slice of wood doweling to fit the hole size too.
