I have an 83 cm wide desk, that i would like to place inside my ivar system, between 2 of the uprights. Trouble is, the ivar shelf is only 80cm across...does anybody know, or can think of, a way around this? any help would be much appreciated!
is there any chance you can take a picture of the desk. without seeing what we're dealing with (and i know what ivar looks like) it's just a "square peg in a round hole" discussion.
is the ivar system the deeper one or the more shallow?
I just took a look at the IKEA website - it says the shelves are 83 cm. wide, but with the uprights, you come in around 80 or 81 cm. across, from inside to inside.
How about just using one unit on either side of the desk, and using some wall mounted shelves above the desk?
Dulci - Ivar comes in 2 depths - 12 and 20", I think (I didn't look for that measurement).

Just taking my inner IKEA geek out for a walk.
I've installed a ton of Ivar in many different locations in the past 20 yrs and its strength is also its weakness. The main structural element is the shelf and with the metal brackets built the way they are, they are not easily adjusted or adapted. A skilled craftsman with a shop full of tools could make custom shelves that were longer and put the metal brackets back in. But it is not an easy fix.
Honestly, just put Ivar on either side of the desk and some other kind of shelving over the desk. Unless you have a router and/or a table saw, it would be best not to try. Because the structure would be weakened.
