Our son needed storage for his Lego collection (especially after he inherited his father/uncle's 30 year old collection!) and display space for his creations. We looked at many options, including some plastic drawer units from Wal-mart/Target, but then we found this Midsund 4 drawer chest in the AS-IS room for $30. It's sturdy, stable and well-suited. Shallow drawers are perfect for base plates and small creations that he doesn't want to disassemble. The bottom drawers have plastic shoe boxes filled with different types of Lego - minifigs, wheels/gears, etc., train tracks...
There are many other IKEA chests and storage options that would work for Lego - I think zeuss also had to plan for her son's Lego collection in this thread: Here are my ideas for son's bedroom (her son's room puts mine to shame!)
Though stable on it's own, you just can't count on kids (or some adults, even!) not trying to climb up open drawers, or simply open the top loaded drawer and tip the thing over. We used straps like these: http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=ic0cc-2...1=FFFFFF&f=ifr
Yeah - both kids rooms are painted. Each year on their birthdays I paint them a new 'Thing'. Alex's room started out as a Jungle room, but he's had me add an anteater and the blue thing behind the Lego cabinet is a Pleiosaur. Elizabeth's room is sort of backyard animals, but one year she wanted a dancing slinky and an elephant (where DO they get these things?).

Ok - you asked for it! These are of Alex's Jungle Room. We actually built the wall unit to fit BASTANT baskets from IKEA that he uses for his clothing....only his clothing is starting to get too big to fit!! Susan...AMAZING! I think it's fantastic and Alex is obviously one very loved and very inspired little boy. I can't believe that tiny baby is such a big boy now.
