Forbes Names Top Billionaires – Ingvar Kamprad Seventh

Friday, February 27th, 2009 by Tigratrus

Forbes magazine has published their annual list of the world’s richest men. The World’s Billionaires lists Ingvar Kamprad as #7 on the list of the wealthiest men.

Though he’s been on the list of billionaires for a number of years now, it might surprise many to know that Ingvar Kamprad does not actually own IKEA.  Noone does. IKEA is actually held by a foundation – that’s right…the world’s largest furniture company is legally governed under Dutch laws for charities. From the article, IKEA Corporate Structure

IKEA is privately held by a foundation, which in turn owns a group that controls the companies that run IKEA’s individual operations. Responsible for this tangled web of corporations, foundations and tax shelters is IKANO, a Swedish group also owned by the Kamprad family that is primarily concerned with managing the Kamprad family fortune, though interestingly, in 2008 it owned 25% of Habitat, another large European based furniture store.

Still, the story of IKEA and Ingvar Kamprad’s life are fascinating. Read about Kamprad’s rise to success in the article, IKEA History.

IKEAFANS help with solution to nagging IKEA Home Planner problem

Thursday, February 26th, 2009 by Tigratrus

It’s a problem that has plagued the IKEA IT staff working on the IKEA Home Planner software – in some cases, an installation of the free planning software doesn’t display all of the available furniture ranges.  Most often left out are:

  • Freestanding units
  • VÄRDE
  • Appliances
  • Dining furniture
  • Wardrobes
  • Mirrors
  • The entire ADULT-section of Bedroom

There have been some hacks described by IKEAFAN wd40 (see this thread: IKEA Seeks YOUR help! Tech help: IKEA HomePlanner on Windows Vista ) previously but the problem was still an elusive one for the tech team.

IKEAFANS to the rescue!  IKEAFAN Byteck found a workaround that may lead to a permanent resolution to this problem.  Hadirajan, our resident IKEA IT tech said,

So it seems our wonderful community has found a workaround for a problem that we at IKEA haven’t been able to reproduce on more than 3000+ clients. It’s a known issue for us at IKEA, but we’ve never been able to reproduce it and test for solutions.

Way to go, IKEAFANS!

If you are able, please help with testing the theory by following the directions in this thread:  IKEA Seeks YOUR help! Tech help: Missing furniture

IKEA cabinet color: Anything as long as it's white or beech. Edgebanding to the rescue!

Can you see the white boxes behind the doors?

Can you see the white boxes behind the doors?

A common problem with IKEA cabinets is the fact that the boxes themselves come in any color you’d like… As long as you like white or beech :-).  Well, you can use edgebanding to solve that problem!  It’s much eaiser to do if you put the edgebanding on the cabinet parts before you assemble it.  It’s particularly noticable with dark doors, and IKEA Fans’ Goffgirl not only fixed it for herself, but showed everyone else how.

See more pictures and join in the discussion about adding edgebanding!

PAX Komplement Drawers Complement Akurum Pantry Cabinet

Monday, February 9th, 2009 by Tigratrus

Wow – what a genius idea!  Can’t say enough about this fantabulous mod for an Akurum pantry cabinet using PAX Komplement wood pull-out drawers. IKEAFANS member JsN tells about her mod in the Modifications forum

Some time ago we remodeled our kitchen using Akurum/Adel in birch. We put in one of the high cabinets with shelves and 2 drawers (30×88x24) to use as a pantry. Overall I love it, but found that due to the depth, it was a bit of a pain to have to go diggin into it to find a can of this or that. So from almost day 1 I’ve wanted pull-out shelves. We’ve made many trips to our local Ikea in hopes of seeing something like this but never did. On a recent trip we happened through the closet section and I noticed the Komplement pullout drawers and baskets. After checking width I found that they have a 29.5″ size, which I thought might fit. They also had these on sales for $12 at that time so I picked up four of them along with one of the wire baskets of the same size and headed home.

Much to my disappointment they were naturally .5″ too short. I remedied that with a quick trip to HD to pick up a box of 100 1/4″ SAE washers and some longer screws. I don’t recall the exact size, but if you take the included screws with you, you can easily find a near perfect match that is twice the length. I used 7 washers total, three one one side, four on the other and I have to say we LOVE the result. The pantry is so much better organized and easier to use. We literally have 4x the usable space that we had previously and it’s so easy to find anything you’re looking for!

I assume you could use these in any similarly sized cabinets using the same amount of washers. Anyway, I hope someone else finds this useful. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask. Love the site!

What a way to organize those pantry cabinets! Excellent use of space and cheaper to boot! Congrats on a well-done mod, JsN!
